Diane Sawyer’s move to the “World News” anchor chair has set off a chain-reaction of reassignments. Sawyer’s January date to take over the prime anchor position, succeeding Charlie Gibson who wraps up his tenure Friday (12/18), has been accelerated to Monday, December 21.
Replacing Sawyer as co-anchor of “Good Morning America” is George Stephanopoulos. He will continue to host “This Week” until a successor is chosen. At GMA Stephanopoulos will work alongside Robin Roberts, who is staying put.
Meanwhile, Chris Cuomo exits GMA to become co-anchor of “20/20” alongside Elizabeth Vargas. Succeeding Cuomo as news anchor for GMA is Juju Chang. Sam Champion will continue as weather anchor.
“I’m pleased to announce that beginning Monday, December 14, our new anchor team at ‘Good Morning America’ will be in place and on the air,” ABC News President David Westin said in announcing the staffing changes.
