According to a Reuters report that has reverberated across Wall Street and through the halls of CBS properties across the U.S., National Amusements — the controlling shareholder with roughly 80% voting stock in both CBS Inc. and Viacom — is preparing to take the first steps in the exploration of a merger between the two companies.

This process may see National Amusement ask each company to form an independent board committee to explore their reunification.

To MoffettNathanson senior analyst Michael Nathanson, the news “represents the next chapter in a story that in our minds should have never occurred to begin with.”
