After a three-year, pandemic-related hiatus more than 300 students, faculty, staff, and media professionals gathered in Baltimore in late October for the 2022 National Student Electronic Media Convention (NSEMC).

Over four days, attendees listened to more than 35 media professionals and attended more than 65 informational sessions to learn valuable skills and techniques to take back to their media organizations at colleges and universities across the country.

NSEMC 2022 culminated on October 29 with the presentation of the National Student Production Awards, honoring the best student work in media production across 33 categories. Judges reviewed more than1,100 total entries before honoring four finalists and one winner in each category.

A complete list of winners, and clips of their winning work, is available on the CBI Baltimore website: https://www.askcbi.org/2022- national-student-production-awards/.

In addition, College Broadcasters Inc., which organized the event, recognized three faculty/staff members for their outstanding commitment to student media. Dave Black, the long-time general manager of WSUM-FM at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and former CBI board member, passed away this past February. The CBI Board voted to name the Excellence in Advising Award in his honor.

Dr. Lisa Marshall of Muskingum University earned this year’s Dave Black Excellence in Advising Award and Dr. Greg Newton won the Joel Willer Award for his long-term service to student media at Ohio University.

“It was so much fun to meet in person once again and the energy was fantastic,” said CBI
President John Morris. “Many of our attendees, from students and advisors, told me that they were excited to be at NSEMC and having opportunities to network and learn from one another. We look forward to building on the momentum and are already looking forward to next year.”

The 2023 NSEMC will be held at the Rosen Plaza Hotel, Oct. 18-21, 2023, in Orlando.

College Broadcasters Inc. currently represents more than 200 active radio and television member stations.
