NBC says Whitney getting bigger

Wednesday Results:


* At 8 p.m. ET, “Whitney” (1.7/5 in adults 18-49, 4.4 million viewers overall) grew by 21 percent versus last week in 18-49 rating (to a 1.7 from a 1.4), earning its top rating in three weeks (since January 11), despite time-period competition last night from “American Idol” and CBS’s “Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials.”  Versus NBC’s average in the time period last season, “Whitney” is up 31 percent in 18-49 rating (with a 1.7 vs. a 1.3, “live plus same day” non-sports).  In the time period, “Whitney” is #2 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in adults 18-34 (tie) and women 18-34.  Note that first-run telecasts of “Whitney” have averaged a 35 percent increase on these next-day “live plus same day” ratings when Nielsen has issued “live plus seven day” results.

* At 8:30 ET, “Are You There, Chelsea?” (1.7/5 in 18-49, 4.1 million viewers overall) increased its 18-49 rating versus last week by 21 percent (to a 1.7 from a 1.4).  “Chelsea” retained 100 percent of its 18-49 lead-in despite time-period competition from the concluding half-hours of “American Idol” and the CBS special “Super Bowl’s Greatest Commercials.”  “Chelsea” was up 8 percent versus lead-in in adults 18-34 (1.4 vs. 1.3) and up 13 percent in women 18-34 (1.8 vs. 1.6).  Versus NBC’s average in the time period last season, “Chelsea” is up 21 percent in 18-49 rating (with a 1.7 vs. a 1.4, “live plus same day” non-sports).  In the time period, “Chelsea” is #2 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in adults 18-34 and women 18-34.  Keep in mind that first-run telecasts of “Chelsea” have been adding 24 percent to these next-day “live plus same day” ratings when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results.

* At 9 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” averaged a 1.1/3 in adults 18-49 and 4.8 million viewers overall.  Week to week, the “SVU” encore is up 31 percent or 1.1 million persons in total viewers (to 4.787 million from 3.641 million). 

* At 10 p.m. ET, another rebroadcast of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (1.6/4 in 18-49, 5.8 million viewers overall) is #1 in the time period among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults 18-49, as well as women 18-49, women 25-54 and adults, men and women 18-34.  “SVU” built on its lead-in by 45 percent in 18-49 rating and 22 percent in total viewers. 

* “Law & Order: SVU” is up week to week by 14 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 1.6 from a 1.4) and up 43 percent or 1.8 million persons in total viewers (5.816 million vs. 4.053 million).  Note that “Law & Order: SVU” originals have been adding 46 percent to these next-day “live plus same day” ratings when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results so far this season.

* In the 10:30 lead-in to local news, the encore “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” delivered a 5 percent margin of victory in the key news demographic of adults 25-54 (with a 2.1 rating vs. a 2.0 for CBS’s #2 “CSI” rebroadcast), reversing the order of the prior half-hour, when “CSI” held a 10 percent advantage (2.2 vs. 2.0).  “SVU” also led the 10:30 half-hour among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults, men and women 18-34; adults, men and women 18-49; and women 25-54.
