THE ANNUAL SPECIAL DELIVERS ITS FOURTH STRAIGHT YEAR OF GAINS, INCREASING VS. LAST YEAR BY 7 PERCENT IN BOTH 18-49 AND TOTAL VIEWERS

CARSON DELIVERS THE BIGGEST INCREASES AMONG THE NEW YEAR’S EVE MIDNIGHT SPECIALS ON THE BROADCAST NETS

“NBC’s New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly” has scored its biggest ratings results ever, topping its four prior 11:30 p.m. ET telecasts in adult 18-49 rating and total-viewer average, according to “live plus same day” viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research.  

On New Year’s Eve from 11:30 p.m.-12:30 a.m. ET, “NBC’s New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly” delivered a 3.2 rating, 11 share in adults 18-49 and 9.3 million viewers overall, beating its previous best results established one year earlier, by 7 percent in both 18-49 and total viewers.  These are the biggest increases among the midnight New Year’s Eve specials on the major networks and the only increase in 18-49 rating.  This year’s edition was also telecast on CNBC and earned a combined 3.4 rating in adults 18-49 on NBC and CNBC.

Only six non-sports primetime telecasts on any network last week earned a higher rating than NBC’s 3.2 for “New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly.” — ABC’s “Desperate Housewives,” “Brothers & Sister” and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” and Fox’s “The Simpsons,” “Family Guy” and “Cleveland Show.”

This year’s “NBC’s New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly” outscored the Fox New Year’s Eve special (2.0/7 in 18-49, 4.7 million viewers overall from 11 p.m.-12:30 a.m. ET) in 18-49 and total viewers for a fifth year in a row.

“NBC’s New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly” started as a primetime special on December 31, 2004 (1.7 rating in adults 18-49, 4.5 million viewers overall from 10-11 p.m. ET) and has steadily grown since then, switching to start times at roughly 11:30, earning a 2.5 rating in 18-49 and 7.3 million viewers overall in 2005, a 2.6 rating and 7.5 million viewers in 2006, a 2.8 rating and 8.0 million viewers in 2007 and a 3.0/10 and 8.6 million viewers overall in 2008.  This year’s coverage included a 10-11 p.m. segment that averaged a 1.2/4 in 18-49 and 3.4 million viewers overall.
