Russ Mitchell, current anchor of the “CBS Evening News” weekend editions and “The Early Show” and a national correspondent for CBS News is leaving to network to take a top anchor position in local television. Mitchell will be joining Gannett’s WKYC-TV (NBC) Cleveland as Managing Editor Evening News and lead anchor effective January 16th.
In his new job Mitchell will be lead anchor of WKYC’s 6:00 pm and 11:00 pm daily newscasts.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my years at CBS and the challenges and excitement of a network role, but I’ve been offered a unique opportunity to help create the next generation of local news in a great place and have a key role in trying to make a difference in a wonderful community,” said Mitchell on the WKYC website.
“Russ’s breadth of experience and his passion for our industry and our local mission is unparalleled,” said WKYC President and General Manager Brooke Spectorsky.
“I’m a Midwestern guy. I’m used to hard work, I get the weather, and I can’t wait to settle my family in a community where local news can still make a difference,” added Mitchell. The Missouri native worked in local TV in his home state and Texas before joining CBS in 1992.
