Capitol Broadcasting, the owner of radio and television stations in North Carolina’s Research Triangle — in addition to the Durham Bulls minor league baseball team and a commercial real estate development arm — has invested in NewsOn, an app platform that provides consumers access to live and on-demand local newscasts and local news clips from 167 stations in 107 markets across the U.S.

The NewsON ownership group Capitol is joining includes a diverse group of television station owners, including the ABC Owned Television Station Group, Cox Media Group, Hearst Television, Hubbard Broadcasting, Media General, Raycom Media and Sinclair Broadcast Group.

The pact puts Capitol’s NBC affiliate in Raleigh, WRAL-5, on the NewsOn platform.

“This is a great partnership for us as a business and as a service to our communities,” said James F. Goodmon, Jr., VP/GM of the Capitol Broadcasting New Media Group. “We have long been dedicated to serving our customers on the platforms that matter, and NewsON fills a void in the marketplace. It will attract new viewers to our content, and allow us to generate new revenue on digital platforms while also complementing our existing businesses.”

Louis Gump, CEO of NewsON, added, “The arrival of Capitol is another major step forward for NewsON toward our goal of becoming the essential local news source for a national audience.”

NewsON is available at no cost from the Apple iTunes store and Google Play store on Android devices.

The Roku platform on Roku players and Roku TVs are also compatible for NewsOn.
