The next regional EAS test using the National Periodic Test event code is set for this week and involves 25 areas.
FEMA’s Integrated Public Alert and Warning System will generate the message and geo-target it to these areas: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, D.C., Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Texas, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Virginia.
The test date is this Wednesday, Feb. 24 at 2:20 p.m. While this is a voluntary regional test, the point is to give stations a chance to confirm their EAS encoder/decoder is configured to receive and pass-on the alert, and if not, fix the problem (with no station penalties from the FCC) before the mandatory test in December.
FEMA has been organizing the test in coordination with state broadcaster associations and state emergency management agencies.
