No fireworks for Emmis

SkyConcert, which has been billed as “Indiana’s biggest festival and fireworks show,” is the latest victim of the recession. Emmis Communications has called off the Labor Day Weekend event.

“For the last 26 years, Emmis Communications has hosted SkyConcert, Indiana’s biggest festival and fireworks show, during LaborDay weekend. This collaboration of advertisers and sponsors was our gift to our hometown. In better times, Emmis was able to view this event as a demonstration of the gratitude we felt for our audiences,” the Indianapolis-based radio company said in an announcement.

“This year, due to the state of the economy, we have been unable to garner the financial partners necessary to support the event, and we are unable to take on the full cost ourselves. As a result, we have made the decision to suspend the SkyConcert event for 2009,” Emmis said.

“It is our sincere hope that as the economy rebounds, we will once again be able to share SkyConcert with our listeners,” the announcement added.
