We haven’t sworn in the 111th Congress yet. We don’t even know if the senator that eventually emerges from Minnesota will be a returning senior senator or a newly-minted junior senator. But we do know that Republicans in the House are planning their first official fundraiser for 1/6/09, just hours after the 111th takes the oath. House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) is looking to avoid a repeat of the 2008 cycle when his campaign organization not only had trouble raising cash, but was also hit with an embezzlement scandal. So he’s throwing a party, asking for a cover charge of $10K-$15K from attendees. According to Politico, the National Republican Congressional Committee actually has to make up ground before it starts to build – it’s $6.5M in debt.

RBR/TVBR observation: If politicians are already thinking about cash for 2010, it probably won’t be long before they start thinking about free air time from broadcasters. Let’s see how long it takes for that one to rear its ugly head once again.
