Noncom strays into commercial corral

KXPW-LP Georgetown TX, and LPTV serving the Austin DMA, has been hit with a hefty $20K notice of apparent liability for running underwriting announcements that seem to have slipped over the line into the commercial message realm. The licensee is Power Radio Corporation. The FCC published scripts for some of the announcements, which date back to 2003 and 2004, and they are rife with standard ad lingo like “a unique eatery,” “only the freshest ingredients,” “the service was terrific,” and on and on. In fact, the FCC warned that in the future, it may levy even harsher punishment on noncoms running these types of “underwriting” messages.
