Oh, those radio pranksters

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) hung up on President-elect Barack Obama Wednesday – twice – thinking it was really the Elvis Duran and the Morning Show “Phone Tap” segment. She did eventually speak to Obama and yesterday she appeared on the radio show as well to take her lumps. We don’t have a recording of any of the telephone misadventures with the soon-to-be leader of the free world, but we do have a link to the audio of Ros-Lehtinen’s radio appearance.

The Congresswoman was suitably impressed by Obama’s voice, telling him he did a better job of imitating the President-elect than the guy on “Saturday Night Live.” After she hung up, a call came from Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), who has been tapped to be Obama’s White House Chief of Staff. Ros-Lehtinen knows him, but also thought it was a radio prank and hung up on him before he could pass the phone back to Obama.

Finally, Rep. Howard Berman (D-CA) called the Congresswoman. He is Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and she is the ranking Republican member. Ros-Lehtinen was still skeptical and demanded that Berman recount a private joke that only the two of them know about. He did and Ros-Lehtinen then realized that she had, indeed, hung up on the real Obama – twice. Chagrined, Ros-Lehtinen told Berman, “I know this sounds very presumptuous, but please tell President-elect Obama that Ileana is ready to receive his call.”

Having been blamed for a prank that they didn’t pull, Elvis Duran and the Morning Show had Ros-Lehtinen on the air as a guest yesterday to recount the incident. The link is here. “You deserve to be hung up on,” the Congresswoman laughed as she spoke with Duran.
