OMVC opens up to manufacturers

At CES 2011 in Las Vegas, the Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC) unveiled the “OMVC Mobile DTV Forum,” which opens the organization’s arms electronics manufacturers as well as broadcasters. Dell, Harris, LG Electronics, and Samsung Mobile are among the charter members. These members have been with Mobile DTV from its inception, including participating in the recent Consumer Showcase in Washington DC, which demonstrated the capabilities of Mobile DTV.

“It is fitting that, as the Mobile DTV industry evolves from the experimental stage into active business planning, our organization expands its membership,” said Vince Sadusky, president and CEO of LIN Media and president of the OMVC.

Members of the Mobile DTV Forum are expected to contribute significantly to the OMVC’s mission of building a robust marketplace for mobile digital TV, and will get direct access to the OMVC’s Technical Advisory Group. OMVC will be actively soliciting additional members from OEMs, software, service and content providers.

RBR-TVBR observation: This should bring the handheld over-the-air service faster consumer adoption, as broadcasters and manufacturers work more closely to develop a revenue model and bring it to a higher competitive level against broadband/smartphone device viewing.
