Online streams not yet big PPM factor

0

More than 500 digital stations are encoding across the 14 PPM markets, but only 13 streams (including one counted twice for an embedded market) met minimum reporting  standards for Arbitron’s February report. That’s down from the peak in December, when in-office listening to Christmas music may have been a factor.

The December PPM ratings remain the high water mark for digital streams, with online streams meeting minimum reporting standards 14 times across 10 markets. The Internet stream of WLIT-FM Chicago even registered a 1.1 cume rating persons 6+, well above the 0.5 threshold.

The tally fell to 11 digital streams in seven markets for the “Holiday” PPM report, then 11 streams in 10 markets for the January report.

The recently released February PPM results show the usual suspects as digital streams meeting the minimum reporting standard. None score any higher than a 0.7 cume.

As important as streaming is to radio’s future, it’s going to be a while before anyone’s livelihood in radio is dependent more on streaming than the over the air product.

RBR/TVBR observation: We should start taking bets on when the first HD-2 channel will break the PPM minimum standard.
