Peter Smyth’s Next Act May Involve Tech

Peter SmythWhen news broke last week of Beasley Broadcast’s plan to acquire Greater Media, pundits began speculating about the fate of several executives of the Massachusetts-based radio group. Chief among them is Peter Smyth, who started with Greater Media 30 years ago at its Boston cluster and has been chairman and chief executive officer of the company since 2003.

He’ll stay at the helm of the company through closing, which is expected this fall. But after that, his plans are undetermined.

He plans to remain in radio in some capacity, telling RBR+TVBR Weekly Tech Roundup in an interview he grew up listening to a transistor radio at night and still does.

Smyth was an early HD Radio supporter as well as an advocate for radio streaming.

Now, he tells us he’s interested “in the migration to a digital platform and how” that happens. “How do we make radio content more mobile? I believe content drives the business,” he said, adding he’s been trying to figure out the pathway for radio going forward.

He learned a long time ago how to distinguish between “what’s a hobby and what’s a business.”

“How do we make radio be able to monetize digital assets to the same percentage as” other companies like Google and Apple?, he asked rhetorically.

The dashboard fascinates Smyth, indicating something along those lines would be of interest.

  1. Peter could fix HD! Original false start with promo only, lack of compelling content, talent development and easy access. But, that was once the case with FM. Clark
