Radio One fires all in-house DJ

Radio One DC has fired all of its on-air staffers at Urban AC WMMJ-FM (Majic 102.3) DC the morning of 6/28 (with the exception of Tom Joyner).  Indeed, their website under DJs lists Tom Joyner and nothing else. Those fired include Olivia Fox for middays, afternoon driver Alvin John Waples, and nighttimer Mike Chase. However, it looks like they will all be replaced, as Radio One posted job openings on their corporate website for three air talent jobs and a MD for WMMJ. So the shakeup continues: GM Michelle Williams resigned in April; PD Kathy Brown left not long after, according to reports. In May, Jammillah Muhammad was named PD of WMMJ and sister station WPRS-FM DC (Gospel).

Olivia Fox posted this statement on streetroachpics.com: “I am no longer employed by Radio One. However, I would like to thank Radio One for giving me yet another opportunity to work in one of my favorite places, the Washington DC metro area. Majic 102.3 was a wonderful station to work for, with a close knit on air staff and sales team, it truly was an amazing place to work for the past three years.”

And she vows that she’ll be back on the DC airwaves very soon. “Many of you have followed my 22-plus-year radio career and have seen me in this situation before, and each and every setback has always been a set up for a new wonderful beginning. This shall be no different. I ask that you continue to follow me at OliviaFox.com, and, after taking a month or so off to enjoy my family, I will be announcing my next move.”
