Known as “The Doctor” for his verbal surgery in over 40 years on radio in his hometown of Philadelphia, Reginald “Reggie” Bryant has died of colon cancer at 68. He was a founder of both the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) and the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists.

“Reggie was a true intellectual and provocateur,” said fellow NABJ founder Acel Moore, Associate Editor Emeritus of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

“He was a constant defender and supporter of me,” added Paul Brock, former News Director of WHUR-FM Washington, DC and founding Executive Director of NABJ.

Over his long career in radio, Bryant hosted shows on WCAU-AM, WPEN-AM, WHAT-AM and most recently, since 2006, WURD-AM. The Lomax family, current owners of the station, hailed him as a “giant” in an obituary posted on the station website.

Bryant also co-produced and hosted “Black Perspective on the News,” which was produced by WHYY-TV Philadelphia and aired on PBS 1973-’78. In addition to his radio and television work, Bryant was a filmmaker, writer and artist. At one point he was an assistant professor at the Pennsylvania College of Art while simultaneously hosting his “Urban View” show on WCAU. He received bachelor and master degrees in fine art from Temple University and also did graduate work at the University of California at Santa Barbara.
