As a correspondent for CBS News, Richard Threlkeld was one of the last US reporters to leave Saigon as the Vietnam War ended. Now he has died at age 74 in a traffic crash on Long Island.

Police say Threlkeld’s Mini Cooper collided with a tanker truck. The truck driver was uninjured.

Threlkeld had joined CBS news in 1966 and shocked his employer by jumping to upstart ABC News in 1981. But he returned to CBS News in 1989, before retiring 10 years later.

Threlkeld’s widow, Betsy Aaron, was also a CBS News correspondent.
