Real estate mogul and reality television star Donald Trump put a temporary end to speculation that he would run as a third party candidate in the 2012 presidential election when he endorsed the candidacy of Mitt Romney. Now he’s going to bat for Romney in the hotly contested Michigan primary. He’s on a tour of the state via its local radio stations – and we’re not talking ads – we’re talking live interviews in multiple markets.
According to ABC News, Trump is being heard on local radio in at least four markets, including Detroit, Flint-Saginaw, Lansing and Traverse City.
A Trump aide said that his endorsement of Romney was meant as much more than a symbolic gesture – he pledged his assistance to the Romney campaign at that time and this is one way of making good on the pledge.
According to CNN, in one interview Trump said, “There’s nothing – there’s no gift, no Christmas gift, that could be given better than Rick Santorum to the Democrats.” He added that the Democrats “…”are just salivating at that. And, you know, I don’t think they believe it’s going to happen. But boy, would they like it to happen because that would be an easy election.”
In point of fact, Trump has not put the idea of a third party candidacy to bed – should Santorum win the Republican nomination, the possibility of a Trump run may well be back on the table.
