Red Zebra Radio’s WTEM-AM DC, the flagship station for the Washington Redskins radio broadcast, announced that Sam Huff will retire after 38 years in the booth. A Hall of Fame linebacker, Huff joined played for the Redskins from 1964-69 after spending the first eight seasons of his career with the New York Giants. He became a part of the broadcast team in 1975. Former teammate and good friend Sonny Jurgensen joined the broadcast team in 1981, and together they formed a beloved tandem, reported The Washington Post.
Huff, who turns 79 this fall, worked under a reduced schedule last season as health had deteriorated over the last several years. Last season marked the first time since 1974 that Huff hadn’t worked a Redskins season opener, as Barry Svrluga wrote.
Huff hopes to still have an occasional role in the team’s broadcast this season, he said.
“I’ve enjoyed every game that I played, coached and provided color commentary over the last 50 years with the Washington Redskins. I look forward to joining Larry, Sonny and Doc on the pre-game show a few times this season.”
Redskins owner Dan Snyder said in a release, “Although Sam’s commentary duties will change he will always be part of our Redskins family, and we look forward to his future contributions on Washington Redskins broadcasts.“
Huff will be honored during a pregame ceremony at a Redskins game.
