Santorum first GOP presidential hopeful to buy radio ads

Radio is getting its first ad spending by an official candidate for the 2012 presidential race. Former Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) launched a 60-second radio spot this week.

In a demonstration of how the media landscape has changed, the Santorum spot is first airing on some of the talk channels of Sirius XM satellite radio. According to the LA Times, the same spot will also be used on local AM and FM radio stations in the early caucus/primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.

The spot focuses on fiscal issues. “Someone has to have the courage to tell the American public we can’t afford the government we have right now and we need to cut it back across the board,” Santorum says, charging that the national debt is immoral.

You can hear the spot on Santorum’s campaign website.

RBR-TVBR observation: It is not surprising that Santorum would turn to radio to try to break out of the GOP pack. He’s certainly comfortable behind the mic, having just recently ended a regular fill-in host job with Salem Radio Networks as he declared himself an official candidate for the Oval Office.
