Satellite heading to Wausau

Quincy Newspaper’s WAOW-TV (ABC) Wausau, WI is getting another satellite station, assuming the FCC grants its waiver request. It will pay $1.55 million to buy WBIJ-TV Crandon, WI from The Estate of Dennis Selenka.

While WBIJ is licensed as a full power VHF station, its coverage area is more comparable to an LPTV. It transmits with 4.3 kW on Channel 4 and its digital signal will have 3.2 kw on Channel 12. The engineering map submitted with the application shows the signal covering a good portion of Forest County, which is home to fewer than 10,000 people.

The waiver request notes that Paramount Media Advisors contacted about 25 potential buyers, but found only one even interested in the station as a standalone operation. But that potential buyer looked at the station more closely and decided it would not be a successful investment.
