WCCO-AM Minneapolis-St. Paul reports the death of one of its iconic announcers, Steve Cannon. He was 81 and had been battling cancer.

Cannon was not just one voice on WCCO – he was a man of many voices. In his 26 years on the air “The Cannon Mess” included lots of characters who interacted with Cannon – all performed by Cannon himself. The St. Paul Pioneer Press reported that he also did play-by-play for University of Minnesota men’s hockey and color commentary for the Minnesota North Stars.

Cannon retired in 1997 after 47 years in radio, the last 26 at WCCO.

The station has been airing clips of Cannon’s programs, along with remembrances from friends and fans.
