Stocks close higher on upbeat earnings

Stocks closed higher on Tuesday amid better-than-expected earnings results from companies such as Sprint and Merck. The S&P ended the day 8.9 points, or 0.5%, higher at 1,878.33. The Dow closed 86.63 points, or 0.5% higher at 16,535.37. The Nasdaq added 29.14 points, or 0.7% to 4,103.54.
