Former NBC sitcom “Cheers” star Ted Danson will join the cast of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” playing the new supervisor for the Las Vegas CSI team grave shift after heading the crime lab in Portland. That’s the role originally held by William Petersen and then filled by Laurence Fishburne, who had been on the show since its 2008-09 season. “CSI” will begin its 12th season with Danson aboard on 9/21.
His character “comes to the team as they are still grappling with the professional and personal fallout from last season’s take-down of serial killer, Nate Haskell,” according to CBS.
Besides CSI, Danson will remain a series regular on the HBO comedy series, “Bored to Death,” CBS said. 63-year-old Danson found TV stardom some 30 years ago playing Boston bar owner Sam Malone on “Cheers,” which NBC ran for 11 seasons.
