Telemundo sets soccer telecast in Spanish and English

An August 12th World Cup qualifier match in Mexico will be a big deal, with Mexico’s national team playing the USA team. NBC Universal’s Telemundo Communications Group (TCG) announced that it has not only locked up the Spanish rights for US broadcast, but the English rights as well.


TCG says it will broadcast the August 12th Rumbo Al Mundial World Cup qualifier Mexico vs. USA simultaneously on the Telemundo network in Spanish and on its Latino youth cable network mun2 in English. This will be the first-ever live sporting event to air on Telemundo and mun2 simultaneously and the first time mun2 broadcasts a major sporting event.

“Rumbo al Mundial’s record breaking performance once again underscores that Telemundo is the ultimate destination for great soccer presented by the best sports team in the business,” said Don Browne, President of Telemundo. “In addition to offering the best soccer to Telemundo viewers, we are now proud to be able to expand our reach and bring this exciting game to a wider audience,” he added.

On Telemundo, coverage of Rumbo Al Mundial – Mexico vs. USA, “La Hora de la Verdad,” begins at 3:00 pm ET/noon PT, live coast to coast. This World Cup qualifying match will be hosted by Telemundo’s sports experts Andrés Cantor and Sammy Sadovnik, who will bring all the emotion and passion directly from the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Karim Mendiburu will be reporting from the stadium with the fans perspective before the match and Kaziro Aouyama will be reporting from the sideline during the game to provide viewers with up to the minute coverage of each teams strategy during the match while Jessi Losada will be the studio host providing viewers an in-depth look of all players, news and scores from the world of soccer during the match.

Coverage of the game on mun2 will be called “Showdown at the Azteca.” mun2, which bills itself as the lifestyle cable network for bicultural Latinos 18-34, recently surpassed 31 million US households in national distribution. Coverage will begin at 3:55 pm ET/12:55 pm PT on mun2. The network will offer exclusive game announcers, graphics and English-language feed.
