TelemundoAs part of Telemundo’s signature multiplatform education initiative, “El Poder de Saber” (The Power of Knowing), Telemundo Station Group is participating in a series of events this summer to help Hispanic students and parents prepare for the new school year with free health screenings, immunizations, tips for college and more. In addition, thousands of “El Poder de Saber” backpacks will be distributed in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Chicago, Dallas and Houston. Through “El Poder de Saber,” celebrating its 10th year in 2013, Telemundo promotes the educational advancement of young Latinos with an emphasis on preventing high school drop-outs. The campaign consists of on-air public service announcements featuring Telemundo network’s news reporter Vanessa Hauc as its official spokesperson, coupled with education news stories from a team of local “El Poder de Saber” reporters, partnerships with leading organizations and grassroots community outreach conducted by the Telemundo Station Group.


Among the back-to-school efforts to be held this summer:

DALLAS: SATURDAY, AUGUST 3- 8AM-6PM

Location: Dallas Market Hall – Main Hall, 2200 Stemmons Freeway, Dallas

Viva Dallas Hispanic Expo is an annual event designed for the whole family. The event features more than 250 exhibitors, an expanded Health and Wellness Pavilion with free health screenings and information; an Education Pavilion providing information on college education by area universities; a food court and live entertainment.

HOUSTON: SATURDAY, AUGUST 10- 8AM-5PM

Location:  University of Houston (Athletics/Alumni Center) 3100 Cullen Blvd. Houston, TX

The Annual City of Houston Mayor’s Back 2 School Fest will offer families the opportunity to get free school supplies and health screenings (while supplies last). All major Houston school districts will be present distributing valuable information for families to use during the upcoming school year.

DENVER: SUNDAY, AUGUST 11- 8AM-5PM

Location: Saint Cajetan Parish – 299 Raleigh St. Denver

Children in attendance will receive backpacks and school supplies.

HOUSTON: SATURDAY, AUGUST 17- 8AM-3PM

Location: Plaza Americas – 7500 Bellaire Boulevard, Houston

The Annual Back to School Drive, Health Fair & Business Expo offers backpacks, school supplies, uniforms and more for students from K-5th grade, exclusively. In addition, the festival will feature a fun fair for children with candy, moonwalks, face painting, dancing and more; and a Health Fair & Business Expo providing free health consultation and preventative information for families and small businesses.

MIAMI: SATURDAY, AUGUST 17- 10AM-2PM

Location: Valsan store – 7551 West 4th Avenue, Hialeah, FL

Telemundo 51 and Valsan stores have partnered to provide middle and high school Hispanic students with backpacks and school supplies in an effort to help them prepare for the upcoming school year.

CHICAGO: SATURDAY, AUGUST 17, 2013- 10AM-2PM

Location: McKinley Park Field House- 2210 W Pershing Rd. Chicago, IL

The Back to School Health Fiesta offers immunizations, dental check-ups, eye exams and many more for the whole family. In addition middle school students in attendance will receive backpacks and school supplies.

NEW YORK: SUNDAY, AUGUST 25- 11AM-3PM

Location: Latin Women in Action Headquarters 103-06 39th Avenue, Corona, NY

The Latin Women in Action Back To School Drive will distribute free school supplies to motivate students, from K-through college to help them be ready for school.

LOS ANGELES: WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 28- 10AM-12PM

Location: Los Angeles Academy Middle School LAUSD, South Los Angeles, CA

Telemundo 52 has partnered with Teach For America, a national organization that works in partnership with communities to expand educational opportunity for children facing the challenges of poverty, to host “Telemundo 52 T Visita.” The event will provide students of the Los Angeles Academy Middle School with backpacks and school supplies. Guest speakers include Latin Grammy Award artist Miguelito, who donated school supplies and will perform at the school; Telemundo52’s morning anchor Dunia Elvir; and community leaders. This event is exclusively for students registered at Los Angeles Academy Middle School.
