“The Bachelorette” hit season high

During the week of July 9, 2012, ABC claimed 3 of the Top 20 most-watched TV shows:  The Bachelorette – #5, Wipeout-THURS – #17 and Secret Millionaire – #19. For the 2nd week in a row, ABC aired the #1 newsmagazine in Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54, delivering the week’s Top 3 newsmagazines on both measures with 20/20,  20/20-FRIDAY and the debut of NY Med. Building week to week by double-digit margins in Total Viewers (+13%) and Adults 18-49 (+18%), ABC earned its best numbers in 3 weeks – since w/o 6/18/12.


Monday: With its lineup of The Bachelorette and The Glass House, ABC outdrew Fox with its unscripted originals by 8% (Hell’s Kitchen/MasterChef). In Adults 18-49, ABC led NBC (including originals of Fear Factor and American Ninja Warrior) by 82%. For the 5th time in 6 weeks, ABC took first place on the Monday with all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54). ABC marked its 2nd-most-watched Monday this summer and hit its highest summer numbers since early last August with key Women (W18-34/W18-49) – since 8/8/11. Beating Fox’s unscripted lineup (Hell’s Kitchen/MasterChef) from 8-10 pm, ABC’s The Bachelorette won its time slot to qualify as Monday’s #1 TV show in Total Viewers and top series in Adults 18-49. Additionally, for the 8th week running, the ABC unscripted series won its slot across all key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54), while qualifying as Monday’s #1 TV show for the 5th straight week on all three measures. The Bachelorette hit a season-high in Total Viewers, while generating its strongest young adult performance since its season opener 8 weeks ago – since 5/14/12. Ranking as the #7 TV show overall for the week in Adults 18-49, ABC’s The Bachelorette finished among the Top 10 for the 4th week in a row. In fact, The Bachelorette registered as the #1 program overall across all key Women (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54) for the 2nd week in a row. During the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s The Glass House finished #2 against its network rivals with Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, while ranking #1 with Adults 18-34 and among key Women demos (W18-34/W18-49).

Tuesday: A special Tuesday episode of ABC’s Wipeout drew the Net’s largest audience in the 8 o’clock hour this summer in Total Viewers, while also matching ABC’s strongest performance with Adults 18-49. Wipeout made ABC the #1 broadcaster in the 8pm hour with Kids 2-11 (tie). In fact, the broad-appealing series turned in ABC’s best Kids performance in the time slot in 9 months – since 10/11/11. Building on its lead-in by 2.5 million viewers, the debut of ABC’s NY Med shot up to rank as the #1 series in its 10 o’clock time period with Total Viewers. The new ABC series outdrew CBS’ 48 Hours Mystery by 10% and NBC’s Love in the Wild by 31%. In addition, NY Med beat its CBS and NBC competition with the key news demo by 13% each in the hour. NY Med greatly improved over original series programming in the time slot on the year-ago night (Combat Hospital) by 49% in Total Viewers, 42% in Adults 25-54 and 50% in Adults 18-49.

Thursday: ABC ranked #2 on Thursday night to a Big Brother-fueled CBS in Total Viewers, while beating NBC by 75% and Fox by 17% among Adults 18-49. ABC was up over the prior week by 8% among young adults, matching its top-rated non-sports performance on the night since the end of May – since 5/31/12. In the 8 o’clock hour, ABC’s Duets was the 2nd-most-watched show, outdrawing its unscripted competition on Fox (Take Me Out) by 1.7 million viewers. ABC’s Wipeout earned second place to CBS’ season premiere of Big Brother 14 from 9-10pm, dominating the season finale of Fox’s The Choice by 2.7 million viewers and 50% in Adults 18-49. Wipeout also nearly quadrupled (+260%) the young adult delivery of NBC’s Saving Hope. For the 3rd week in a row, the broad-appealing ABC unscripted series stood as Thursday’s #1 broadcast program with Kids 2-11. Despite the increased competition from the Big Brother premiere, ABC’s Wipeout built its overall Viewer count from the prior week’s telecast (+2%) and held 100% of its Adult 18-49 audience. In addition, Wipeout grew by double-digit margins in Men 18-34 (+33%) and Kids 2-11 (+16%) to hit a best-since-premiere number and a season-high, respectively. At 10pm, ABC’s Rookie Blue finished as the #1 program among Women 18-49 and Women 25-54 on the major networks. The ABC drama grew for the 2nd straight telecast in Women 18-49 (+6%) and Women 25-54 (+5%), marking its highest numbers in 3 weeks – since 6/7/12.

Friday: ABC qualified as the most-watched television network on Friday night for the 2nd consecutive week, while defeating NBC by 20%, CBS by 71% and Fox by 100% in Adults 18-49. ABC claimed Friday’s #1 TV program in Total Viewers for the 2nd week running. At 8pm, ABC’s repeat Shark Tank was the most-watched show, leading runner-up CBS’ replay Undercover Boss by 9%. The ABC unscripted series defeated its rivals in Adults 18-49 for the 2nd straight week. Growing over the prior week’s encore by 21% in Total Viewers and by 8% in Adults 18-49, Shark Tank marked summer-highs. ABC’s 20/20-FRIDAY won the 9 o’clock hour and qualified as Friday’s most-watched TV program overall. Head to head in the time slot, ABC’s 20/20-FRIDAY outperformed the first hour of NBC’s Dateline by 1.6 million viewers, by 30% in Adults 18-49 and by 33% in Adults 25-54. 20/20-FRIDAY delivered ABC’s strongest performance in the hour with regular programming this summer in Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54.At 10 o’clock, ABC’s 20/20 turned in its best performance in over a month in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 – since 6/8/12. In addition, the ABC newsmagazine was up over its year-ago telecast by 7% in Total Viewers, by 6% in Adults 25-54 and 8% in Adults 18-49.

Sunday: ABC ranked #1 on Sunday night among Adults 18-49 for the 2nd week running, beating CBS (with the Sunday premiere of Big Brother 14) by 27% and NBC (with a 2-hour Dateline) by 56%. ABC also won the night with Adults 25-54 and among key Women demographics (W18-49/W25-54). For the 2nd week in a row, ABC matched its strongest Sunday this summer with regular programming. ABC’s replay America’s Funniest Home Videos finished #1 in the 7 o’clock hour in Adults 18-49, beating NBC’s original Dateline by 71%. The broad-appealing ABC series also won its time period across all key Women demographics and stood as the top-rated broadcast program with Kids 2-11. Launching over the prior week’s repeat by 16% in Total Viewers and 20% with Adults 18-49, ABC’s AFHV delivered its best performance this summer to date. In addition, the veteran ABC video-clip show was up over its year-ago telecast by 4% and 9% with viewers and young adults, respectively. Building sharply on its lead-in (+25%), ABC’s Secret Millionaire matched the prior week’s season-high in Adults 18-49. From 9-11pm, ABC’s EM: Weight Loss Edition continued to grow during each half-hour of its broadcast, soaring by 1.1 million viewers and 33% in Adults 18-49 from start to finish. In fact, the ABC unscripted series shot up to rank #1 during its second hour from 10-11pm with Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.
