Coupon shopping sites are linking up in a big way these days with local media sites. Groupon is the largest, but there is also eDeals.com, which recently signed CBS Radio, Journal and Post Newsweek. The Groupon shopping website currently offers a daily deal on local goods, services and cultural events in more than 300 markets around the world.

Chicago Tribune Media Group’s ChicagoShopping.com will feature one new local deal each weekday on the site’s homepage. It also links to Tribune properties including WGN-TV and The Chicago Tribune.

“If you like Groupon deals, you’ll now like them twice as much,” said Belinda Englman, General Manager of ChicagoShopping.com.  “By registering at ChicagoShopping.com, you’ll have the option to sign up to receive the exclusive Groupon offer in addition to the feature Groupon highlights on their website each day…For our advertisers, ChicagoShopping.com is yet another solution within Tribune Media Group’s portfolio to expand their reach in the local market.”

RBR-TVBR observation: Belo decided to go the local coupon route on its websites in-house with Yollar.com. It’s a bit of a gamble—by going with national plug & play providers like Groupon, Tribune/ChicagoShopping may guarantee itself more dollars, but potentially cannibalize its own local sales forces’ efforts–especially with cross-platform deals. Belo said of Yollar.com it believes it can deliver a powerful partnership with its trusted local television stations, websites, mobile platforms and social media outlets.
