Tuesday ‘American Idol’ takes FOX to the win finish line

On a highly competitive night of all originals, FOX dominated across all demos and beat the next highest-rated network by +145% among Adults 18-49, +116% among Adults 18-34, +267% among Teens and +47% in Total Viewers.


From 8p-10p, the AMERICAN IDOL Top 9 performance show posted a 7.1/19 rating, significantly outperforming its Tuesday competition.  Compared to DWTS’s Monday performance show, AMERICAN IDOL drew 9.3 million viewers aged 18-49 (versus DWTS’ 6.7 million – only 32% of its total audience on Monday), dominating DWTS by +39% in the key adult demo. In addition, last night’s IDOL out-rated DWTS’s performance show by +50% among Adults 18-34 and by +120% among Teens. In fact, in head-to-head competition in the 8pm hour last night, IDOL beat ABC’s DWTS by +167% among Adults 18-49, +194% among Adults 18-34, +322% among Teens and +46% in Total Viewers

So far this season, (Most Current vs. comparable Most Current), IDOL is retaining 93% of Adults 18-49, 93% of Adults 18-34, 97% of Teens and 94% of Total Viewers. Versus last Tuesday, AMERICAN IDOL was down -8% among Adults 18-49 and -6% in Total Viewers

Competition
ABC’s Dancing With The Stars (2.4/7) delivered its lowest original rating ever, down -20% from this installment’s results premiere last week (3.0/9).  Lost (3.8/10) and V (2.5/7) also posted their lowest original ratings ever excluding clipshows (Lost matched).  Lost fell -7% from last week and -17% from its season average (4.6/11) while V (2.5/7) dropped -11% from its spring premiere last week (2.8/8).

All of the CBS dramas delivered their lowest originals for the season with NCIS (3.4/10) dropping -21% from its 2009/10 first-run average (4.3/12) and freshman series NCIS: LA (2.9/8) and The Good Wife (2.4/7) falling -22% and -14% from theirs (3.7/9 and 2.8/8, respectively).

Following a low episode of Biggest Loser 9 (3.0/8), new NBC drama Parenthood (2.6/7) matched its average rating at 10p.
