Cumulus’ New Playing Field: TuneIn

Entercom President/CEO David Field has made it clear that he wants Radio.com, the underperforming audio streaming platform it acquired from CBS Radio through its Reverse Morris Trust-fueled merger, to be the definitive place for consumers to enjoy its radio stations and podcasts when away from a traditional radio.

As such, Entercom scorned a highly popular streaming audio hub by yanking its stations from the popular platform.

Cumulus Media just took the opposite approach.

The owner of 441 AM and FM stations, fresh out of Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, on Thursday (8/9) inked a multi-year agreement that brings all of its broadcast station’s streams to TuneIn.

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed by Cumulus.

However, the deal does include podcasts from Westwood One Podcast Network.

“As the world’s leader in live digital audio, we are thrilled to provide our listeners access to some of the best live station programming across sports, news, talk and music and entertainment, as well as popular podcasts and other on-demand content offered by CUMULUS MEDIA,” said TuneIn CEO John Donham. “We look forward to a long and successful partnership as we grow the next chapter of the audio business together.”

Cumulus President/CEO Mary Berner added, “We understand that consumers engage with content across multiple platforms and devices. We put our listeners first, and we have made it our mission to provide a modern and platform-agnostic listening experience. Expanding our partnership with TuneIn takes our distribution and promotional opportunities to the next level, exposing our portfolio of leading stations, shows and programs to new fans across streaming, podcast, and voice AI technologies.”

Officially, the new arrangement widens an existing deal between TuneIn and Cumulus subsidiary Westwood One.
