TV news luminaries inspire work of satirical fiction

So just what did happen when FNC’s Bill O’Reilly faced off with MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann – in the boxing ring? Well, nobody knows, because they didn’t, but two characters based on the two media pundits did engage in fisticuffs with Rocky Balboa in John Ruane’s “The Wizards of Spin, America’s Favorite News Stars.”

The satirical work of fiction is published by Second City Books and is available on amazon.com.

In the book, the names have been changed (but with this kind of marketing strategy, the changes obviously aren’t to protect the innocent, or guilty, or whatever you think they are).

“I kept hearing opinions about the on-air battle between O’Reilly and Olbermann, and why they just don’t get into the boxing ring,” said Ruane, who watches both personalities regularly. “So I wrote that story with Battling Will O’Malley facing off against Ken ‘Showdown Assassin’ Oaferton with Rocky Balboa as the referee. It gets pretty wild and I have my own opinion about who wins.”

The book is comprised of pieces on a number of media stars, including Oprah Winfrey, Matt Lauer, Diane Sawyer, Chris Matthews, David Letterman, Stephen Colbert, Jon Stewart, Katie Couric, Dennis Miller, Conan O’Brien and others.
