TV trailblazer dead at 95

She was Ohio’s first female news anchor. The Toledo Blade reports that Jane Marie Ruhfel has died at age 95.


Ruhfel, then known as Jane Marie Schroeder, became a newscaster at WDPD-TV Toledo (now WTVG-TV) in the 1950s after first appearing on a cooking show and a children’s program and then hosting a variety show. After moving to news, she reported from the field as well as the studio.

Her on-air career ended in 1959 when she married WSPD program director Albert Ruhfel, who died in 2005.

Her son told the newspaper his mother died of heart disease on Friday. She was 95.
