Vandals knock Modesto AM off air

Broadcast TowerVandals targeted Pappas Radio’s Oldies KMPH-AM Modesto, CA last week, disrupting transmission and causing hundreds of dollars in damage. David Jackson, PD KMPH Radio, told the Modesto Bee that he awoke at 6 a.m. Thursday and tuned his radio to 840 AM; he was startled to hear dead air.

He called the engineer, who went to the station and discovered the chain link fence with barbed wire on top that circles the property had been cut. Upon closer inspection, the engineer found all the wires leading into the radio station had been cut.

The wires have been fixed and the station is currently on the air. Jackson said KMPH started playing hits from the 1950s and ’60s in July. It was off the air for a few months before then after a contract expired with a Spanish-language Christian talk format.
