Week 17: NBC 'Golden Globe Awards' help, Season-to-date ranks #3

Led by Sunday’s telecast of “The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards,” which was the #1 non-sports telecast of the week in adults 18-49 and other key demos, NBC averaged a 2.0 rating, 5 share in adults 18-49 and 6.4 million viewers overall for the week of January 10-16, according to in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research.


“The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards” was the #1 non-sports primetime telecast of the week in adults 18-49, adults 18-34, adults 25-54 and other key demographic measures. With an average 17.0 million viewers, this year’s “Golden Globes” ranked #5 among all primetime telecasts this week in total viewers (rankings exclude all football overruns and pre-game and post-game telecasts).

Also ranking among the top programs of the week in primetime’s key demographic of adults 18-49 was Tuesday’s telecast of “The Biggest Loser; Couples,” which retained 97 percent of its premiere ratings of one week earlier and ranked #12 among all primetime programs this week (rankings exclude all football overruns and pre-game and post-game telecasts).

Primetime averages for the week of January 10-16 in adults 18-49 were Fox (3.7/10), CBS (2.9/8), ABC (2.1/6), NBC (2.0/5) and CW (0.5/1). In overall total viewers the weekly averages were CBS (11.9 million), Fox (10.3 million), ABC (7.3 million), NBC (6.4 million) and CW (1.3 million).

Season-to-date through 17 weeks, NBC ranks #3 in adults 18-49, up from a #4 ranking at this same point last season, with a 2.8 rating in that key demographic. NBC is matching its year-ago 18-49 rating and is the only network among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox to avoid a year-to-year decline. NBC ranks #2 in adults 25-54 season-to-date, up 3 percent in 25-54 rating versus the first 17 weeks of last year (3.2 vs. 3.1). NBC ranks #3 in total viewers season to date, up 3 percent year to year through the first 17 weeks of the season (8.070 million vs. 7.820 million).

NBC highlights for the week of January 10-16

* On Sunday, “The 68th Annual Golden Globes” won its highly competitive time period in adults 18-49, adults 18-34, adults 25-54, total viewers and other key measures versus such competition as ABC’s “Desperate Housewives,” Fox’s “The Simpsons,” “Family Guy” and week two of “Bob’s Burgers” and CBS’s “60 Minutes,” “Undercover Boss” and “CSI: Miami.”

* “The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards” scored NBC’s highest 18-49 rating in the time period, excluding sports, since last year’s Golden Globes and equaled the highest 18-49 rating for any network in this time period, excluding sports, since ABC’s telecast of the Academy Awards in March 2010

* On Tuesday, “The Biggest Loser: Couples” retained 97 percent of the prior week’s premiere rating in adults 18-49 and built slightly week-to-week in total viewers. Excluding premieres and finales, “The Biggest Loser” delivered its highest 18-49 rating since May 2010 and its biggest overall viewership since February 2010.

* “The Biggest Loser” ranked #2 in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key measures and #1 in women 18-34 in a time period that included competition from CBS’s “NCIS” and “NCIS: LA,” ABC’s “No Ordinary Family” and “V” and Fox’s encore “Glee” and original “Million Dollar Money Drop.”

* Also on Tuesday, “Parenthood” finished within a tenth of a rating point of #1 among the broadcast networks in adults 18-49 and was #1 in adults, men and women 18-34. Despite the return of original competition this week from “The Good Wife” in the time period, “Parenthood” retained 96 percent of its 2.3 rating of the prior week, making this the second-highest 18-49 rating for “Parenthood” since September 21

* The “Parenthood” results are likely to increase substantially when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results for the week. So far this season, “Parenthood” has added an average 43 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” ratings to its “live plus seven day” results. On a percentage basis, “Parenthood” is the #1 biggest gainer in going from “live plus same day” to “live plus seven” among all primetime series on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW.

* NBC ranked #2 on Tuesday night in adults 18-49, total viewers and virtually all other key ratings categories and was #1 among women 18-34.

* On Wednesday, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” won its hour in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key measures versus ABC’s premiere of “Off the Map” and CBS’s “The Defenders” and a “Live To Dance” overrun. “SVU” also ranked #1 in the hour in adults 18-34, adults 25-54 and other key demographic measures. To lead the 10-11 p.m. ET hour, “SVU” built on NBC’s 9:30-10 p.m. lead-in on this disrupted night by 79 percent in 18-49 rating and by 70 percent in total viewers.

* On Thursday, an encore telecast of “Community” generated week-to-week gains for the third straight week in adults 18-49.

* On Friday, a two-hour “Dateline” reported the show’s highest 18-49 rating for a Friday telecast since October 8.
* From its first half-hour to its fourth, Friday’s “Dateline” grew by 38 percent in 18-49 rating and 26 percent or 1.2 million persons in total viewers, to rank #1 for its second hour from 10-11 p.m. among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults 18-49, adults 18-34, adults 25-54 and other key categories.

Ratings reflect “live plus same day” data unless otherwise noted. Season-to-date figures are averages of “live plus seven day” data except for the two most recent weeks, which are “live plus same day.”

Additional NBC highlights for the week of January 10-16:

On Monday, Jan. 3 from 8-9 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Chuck” averaged a 0.8 rating, 2 share in adults 18-49 and 3.0 million viewers overall. Versus the prior week’s encore telecast in this time period, the “Chuck” rebroadcast was up 14 percent in 18-49 rating (0.8 vs. 0.7) and 19 percent in total viewers (3.021 million vs. 2.538 million).

Monday from 9-11 p.m. ET, a rebroadcast of the Sunday, Jan. 9 two-hour preview of “The Cape” averaged a 1.0/2 in 18-49 and 3.6 million viewers overall. “The Cape” rebroadcast built on its lead-in by 25 percent in 18-49 rating and 18 percent in total viewers.

On Tuesday, Jan. 11 from 8-10 p.m. ET, “The Biggest Loser: Couples” (3.2/8 in adults 18-49, 8.8 million viewers overall) retained 97 percent of the prior week’s premiere rating in adults 18-49 and built slightly week-to-week in total viewers (8.788 million vs. 8.785 million). Excluding premieres and finales, this was the highest 18-49 rating for “The Biggest Loser” since May 11, 2010 and the biggest overall viewership since February 9, 2010.

“The Biggest Loser” ranked #2 in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key measures and #1 in women 18-34 in a time period that included competition from CBS’s “NCIS” and “NCIS: LA,” ABC’s “No Ordinary Family” and “V” and Fox’s encore “Glee” and original “Million Dollar Money Drop.”

From its first half-hour to its fourth, “Biggest Loser” gained 17 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 3.5 from a 3.0) and 11 percent in total viewers (to 9.5 million from 8.5 million).

Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET, “Parenthood” (2.2/6 in 18-49, 5.6 million viewers overall) finished within a tenth of a rating point of #1 among the broadcast networks in adults 18-49 and was #1 in adults, men and women 18-34. Despite the return of original competition from “The Good Wife” in the time period, “Parenthood” retained 96 percent of its 2.3 rating of the prior week, making this the second-highest 18-49 rating for “Parenthood” since September 21. This also marks the second-biggest overall viewership for “Parenthood” since September 21.

These “Parenthood” results are likely to increase substantially when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results for the week of January 10-16. Through the season’s first 14 weeks, “Parenthood” has added an average 43 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” ratings to its “live plus seven day” results. On a percentage basis, “Parenthood” is the #1 biggest gainer in going from “live plus same day” to “live plus seven” among all primetime series on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW. In total viewers, “Parenthood” is also the #1 biggest gainer in terms of percentage increase in going from “live plus same day” to “live plus seven day,” adding an average 39 percent.

NBC ranked #2 on Tuesday night in adults 18-49, total viewers and virtually all other key ratings categories and was #1 among women 18-34.

On Wednesday, Jan. 12 from 10-11 p.m. ET, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2.5/7 in 18-49, 8.4 million viewers overall) ranked #1 in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key measures versus ABC’s premiere of “Off the Map” and CBS’s “The Defenders” and a “Live To Dance” overrun. “SVU” also ranked #1 in the hour in adults 18-34, adults 25-54 and other key demographic measures.

To lead the 10-11 p.m. hour, “SVU” built on NBC’s 9:30-10 p.m. lead-in on this disrupted night by 79 percent in 18-49 rating (2.5 vs. 1.4) and by 70 percent in total viewers (8.387 million vs. 4.924 million).

So far this season through 14 weeks, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” added an average 29 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure. In total viewers, “SVU” has added an average 19 percent or more than 1.6 million persons in going from “live plus same day” to “live plus seven day.”

Wednesday from 8-8:38 p.m. ET, a disrupted encore telecast of “Minute To Win It” averaged a 1.5/4 in 18-49 and 5.1 million viewers overall. From 9:20-10:00 p.m., an original segment of “Minute To Win It” averaged a 1.4/4 in 18-49 and 4.9 million viewers overall.

NBC’s coverage of the Presidential address from the Tucson Memorial from approximately 8:38-9:20 p.m. ET was sustaining and was not included in the nightly or weekly averages.

On Thursday, Jan. 13 from 8-8:30 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Community” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 2.8 million viewers overall) generated week-to-week gains in this slot for the third straight week in adults 18-49. Versus the prior Thursday, “Community” was up 10 percent in 18-49 rating (1.1 vs. 1.0), versus two weeks ago, “Community” grew by 38 percent (1.1 vs. 0.8) and versus three weeks ago “Community” was up 57 percent (1.1 vs. 0.7). At 8:30 p.m., a second rebroadcast of “Community” (1.2/3 in 18-49, 2.4 million viewers overall) built on its lead-in by 9 percent in 18-49 rating to match NBC’s top 18-49 rating in this slot since December 16.

Thursday from 9-9:31 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “The Office” (1.5/4 in adults 18-49, 3.3 million viewers overall) ranked #2 in the time period among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in adults, men and women 18-34.

Thursday, from 9:31-10 p.m. ET, a second rebroadcast of “The Office” (1.8/5 in 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall) built on the prior half-hour by 20 percent in 18-49 rating and 11 percent in total viewers. In the time period, “The Office” ranked #2 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in men 18-49 and adults, men and women 18-34.

Thursday at 10 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “30 Rock” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 2.8 million viewers overall) earned NBC’s top 18-49 rating in the time period in three weeks. “30 Rock” ranked #2 in the slot among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults and women 18-34 and #1 in men 18-34. At 10:30 p.m., a second rebroadcast of “30 Rock” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 2.5 million viewers overall) ranked #2 among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults and women 18-34 and tied for #1 in men 18-34.

On Friday, Jan. 14 from 8-9 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Minute To Win It” (1.1/4 in 18-49, 4.5 million viewers overall) finished within one share of the time period lead in adults 18-49 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW. “Minute” clocked NBC’s top total-viewer result in the hour since December 10.

Friday from 9-11 p.m. ET, “Dateline” (1.5/5 in 18-49, 5.4 million viewers overall) reported the show’s highest 18-49 rating for a Friday telecast since October 8. In the time period, “Dateline” tied for #1 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in adults 18-49. From its first half-hour to its fourth, “Dateline” grew by 38 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 1.8 from a 1.3) and 26 percent or 1.2 million persons in total viewers (to 6.0 million from 4.8 million).

For its second hour from 10-11 p.m., “Dateline” ranked #1 among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults 18-49, adults 18-34, adults 25-54 and other key categories.

On Saturday, Jan. 15 at 8 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Chuck” averaged a 0.3/1 in 18-49 and 1.3 million viewers overall.

Saturday at 9 p.m. ET, a rebroadcast of “Law & Order: Los Angeles” averaged a 0.4/1 in 18-49 and 2.3 million viewers overall. From its first half-hour to its second, “Law & Order: LA” grew by 25 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 0.5 from a 0.4) and by 40 percent in total viewers (to 2.7 million from 1.9 million).

Saturday at 10 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Law & Order: SVU” captured a 0.8/2 in 18-49 and 3.8 million viewers overall. From its first half-hour to its second, “SVU” grew by 13 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 0.9 from a 0.8) and by 23 percent in total viewers (to 4.2 million from 3.4 million).

On Sunday, January 16, from 8-11 p.m. ET, and live in all time zones, “The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards” (5.2/14 in 18-49, 17.0 million viewers overall) scored NBC’s highest 18-49 rating in the time period, excluding sports, since last year’s Golden Globes on January 17, 2010, and equaled the highest 18-49 rating for any network in this time period, excluding sports, since ABC’s telecast of the Academy Awards on March 7, 2010. This marks NBC’s top-rated primetime entertainment telecast in adults 18-49 since last year’s Golden Globes telecast.

This year’s “Golden Globe Awards” finished within 5 percent of last year’s telecast in 18-49 rating (5.2 vs. 5.5) and was up slightly in total viewers (17.003 million vs. 16.984 million). This is the biggest overall viewership for a Golden Globe telecast since 2007 (the 2008 awards were announced during a truncated telecast due to the WGA strike).

Versus NBC’s non-sports average in this time period last season, “The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards” telecast was up 126 percent in 18-49 rating (5.2 vs. 2.3) and 154 percent in total viewers (17.003 million vs. 6.696 million).

For the second year in a row, the “Golden Globes” were televised live to all time zones. Sunday from 7-8 p.m. ET, “The 2011 Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet Special” also aired live in all time zones, averaging a 1.1/3 in 18-49 and 5.1 million viewers overall.
