WEEK No. 24:
During the week of February 28, 2011, ABC delivered 6 of the week’s Top 20 TV shows among Adults 18-49, placing 4 of the Top 10 and the No. 1 scripted series overall:  “Modern Family” – No. 4 (No. 1 scripted series), “The Bachelor” – No. 9, “Secret Millionaire” and “Desperate Housewives” tied at No. 10, “20/20 Special Edition – 3/1” – No. 17 and “Castle” – No. 20.

In addition to standing as the week’s top scripted show in Adults 18-49, “Modern Family” was also TV’s No. 1 scripted series in Adults 18-34 and key Women (W18-34/W18-49).  ABC’s Sunday opener of “Secret Millionaire” stood as TV’s biggest unscripted midseason premiere in 3 years with Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 – since 3/2/08, excluding only Olympic-led and Super Bowl-led debuts.   For the 3rd week in a row, ABC claimed the No. 1 newsmagazine in Adults 18-49, as “20/20 Special Edition” earned the week’s top spot with key Adults (AD18-49/AD25-54).  In fact ABC’s “20/20 Special Edition” registered as TV’s top-rated newsmagazine telecast (any net) to air without the benefit of a sports lead-in in more than 2 years with Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 – since 2/13/09.

A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 40% currently, from 36% at the same point in 2010. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

ABC earned first place on Monday evening in Total Viewers (10.9 million) and Adults 18-49 (3.3/9), leading for the 2nd straight week in the key young adult sales demo.  In addition, the Net finished
No. 1 on Monday for the 6th week in a row across all key Women demographics (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54).

Growing for the 2nd week in a row, ABC produced its strongest Monday in 14 weeks among Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 – since 11/22/10.  The Net equaled a 5-month Monday high with Adults 18-34 (2.7/9) – since 9/27/10.

“The Bachelor” (8:00-10:01 p.m.)
Hitting season highs in Total Viewers (11.3 million) and Adults 18-49 (3.5/9), ABC’s “The Bachelor” won its 8:00-10:00 p.m. time slot for the 2nd week running, beating out CBS’ second-place comedy block by 1.3 million viewers and by 9% in young adults (10.0 million & 3.2/9).   In addition, “The Bachelor” led its 2-hour time period among Adults 18-34 (3.0/9) for the 5th consecutive week and registered as Monday’s No. 1 TV series overall with key Women (W18-34/W18-49) for the 9th week in a row.  The 12th-season cast of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” was announced during the second hour of “The Bachelor.”

“Castle” (10:01-11:00 p.m.)
ABC’s “Castle” won the 10 o’clock hour in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49.  ABC’s “Castle” defeated NBC’s original “Harry’s Law” by best-ever margins in Total Viewers (+10% – 10.0 million vs. 9.2 million) and by 56% in Adults 18-49 (+56% – 2.8/8 vs. 1.8/5). In addition, the ABC drama won the hour with Women 18-34 (2.6/8) for its 6th straight airing.  Also worth noting, “Castle” grew from its lead-in across all key Men (M18-34/M18-49/M25-54).

Building by 1.1 million viewers and by 8% in Adults 18-49 over the prior week (9.0 million & 2.6/7 on 2/21/11) with its 2nd straight week of gains, ABC’s “Castle” drew its biggest audience since the beginning of November and posted its highest young adult number since the end of October – since 11/8/10 and 10/25/10, respectively.

ABC produced its strongest Tuesday in nearly 3 months among Total Viewers (6.2 million) and Adults 25-54 (2.5/6) – since 12/7/10.  In Adults 18-49 (2.1/6) and Adults 18-34 (1.4/5), the Net marked its biggest Tuesday in 14 weeks – since 11/23/10.
“V” (9:00-10:01 p.m.)
ABC’s “V” matched its 2nd-best number of the season in Adults 18-34 (1.3/4), while hitting a season high in Women 18-34 (1.5/4). In addition, the show built on its “No Ordinary Family” lead-in by best-ever margins on both Nielsen measures.

Opposite stiff time period competition from a special Tuesday airing of Fox’s “American Idol,” CBS’ top-rated “NCIS: Los Angeles” and the second hour of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser: Couples,” “V” gained 13% in viewers (4.7 million to 5.3 million) and 12% in Adults 18-49 (1.7/5 to 1.9/5) from its first half-hour to its second half-hour.

“20/20 Special Edition-3/1” (10:01-11:00 p.m.)

“20/20” produced ABC’s best results in the time period with a 1-hour program in 2 years among Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 – since 3/3/09.

In Total Viewers and key Adults (AD18-49/AD25-54), “20/20” generated the biggest numbers for any ABC newsmagazine telecast since February 2009 – since 2/13/09.

The Special Edition of “20/20” registered as TV’s highest-rated newsmagazine telecast (any net) to air without the benefit of a sports lead-in in more than 2 years with Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54 – since 2/13/09.

Up year to year for the 4th week in a row, ABC grew over the same night last year (3/3/10) by 1.3 million viewers (6.8 million vs. 5.5 million) and by 15% in Adults 18-49 (2.3/7 vs. 2.0/6).

“Modern Family” (9:00-9:31 p.m.)
Growing from its lead-in at 9:00 p.m. against the third half-hour of “Idol,” ABC’s “Modern Family” defeated its scripted competition, outperforming CBS’ “Criminal Minds” by 21% among Adults 18-49 (4.1/11 vs. 3.4/9).  “Modern Family” finished as Wednesday’s No. 1 scripted TV show in Adults 18-49 for its 17th straight first-run telecast this season.

“Modern Family’s” numbers surged year to year, up by 2.1 million viewers (10.1 million vs. 8.0 million) and by 21% in Adults 18-49 (4.1/11 vs. 3.4/9) over the year-ago evening.

“Off the Map” built its overall audience for the 2nd week in a row and also gained with Women 18-34 for the 2nd straight week.

The ABC freshman drama once again generated strong year-over-year increases for the Net, growing the hour in both Total Viewers (+16% – 5.0 million vs. 4.3 million) and Adults 18-49 (+31% – 1.7/5 vs. 1.3/4) from the same night last year with original programming.
