Week 29: 'The Celebrity Apprentice' helps NBC to see increases

Led by “The Celebrity Apprentice,” “The Biggest Loser: Couples” and “Law & Order: SVU,” NBC averaged a 1.5 rating, 4 share in adults 18-49 and 5.1 million viewers overall for the week of April 4-10, according to in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research.


Primetime averages for the week of April 4-10 in adults 18-49 were CBS (2.7/8), Fox (2.6/8), ABC (1.9/5), NBC (1.5/4) and CW (0.5/1). In overall total viewers the weekly averages were CBS (11.2 million), Fox (7.8 million), ABC (7.6 million), NBC (5.1 million) and CW (1.3 million).

NBC highlights for the week of April 4-10:

* On Sunday, “The Celebrity Apprentice” continues to generate solid increases versus its year-ago performance. This week, “Celebrity Apprentice” was up versus the same night last year by 15 percent in adult 18-49 rating and up 22 percent in total viewers.

* “Celebrity Apprentice” grew robustly in all key measures from its first half-hour to its fourth, including gains of 36 percent in adults 18-49 and 34 percent or 2.4 million persons in total viewers.

* “Celebrity Apprentice” dominated the final 10-11 p.m. ET hour of primetime Sunday, leading in all key demographics — adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54. The 3.2 rating for “Celebrity Apprentice” in adults 18-49 from 10-11 p.m. ET is the highest 10-11 p.m. rating of the week with entertainment programming on ABC, CBS or NBC.

* Also on Sunday, “America’s Next Great Restaurant” grew from its first half-hour to its second in all key ratings categories, including gains of 18 percent in adults 18-49, 23 percent in adults 25-54 and 22 percent in adults 18-34. “Restaurant” built on its lead-in from the previous hour by 33 percent in adults 18-49.

* On Friday, “Who Do You Think You Are?” ranked #1 in its time period among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in adults 18-49, adults 18-34, adults 25-54 and total viewers. “Who Do You Think You Are?” matched its highest 18-49 rating in eight weeks.

* On Thursday, rebroadcasts of “The Office,” “Parks and Recreation” and “30 Rock” all posted double-digits gains in both adults 18-49 and total viewers versus the prior week’s respective encore telecasts.

* On Wednesday, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” ranked #1 in the time period in adults, men and women 18-49 and other key demographics.

* “SVU” grew from its first half-hour to its second in all key ratings categories, including gains of 18 percent in adults 18-49, 15 percent in adults 25-54 and 12 percent in total viewers. In the 10:30 p.m. lead-in to local news, “SVU” delivered an 11 percent margin of victory in the key news demo of adults 25-54 over CBS’s second-place “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior,” erasing a 19 percent deficit in that demo in the prior half-hour.

* On Tuesday, “The Biggest Loser: Couples” ranked #2 in adults 18-49 and #1 in adults 18-34, women 18-34 and women 18-49 in a tough time period that included competition from ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars” and CBS’s “NCIS” and “NCIS: LA.” Week-to-week, “Loser” was up 4 percent in 18-49 rating and 3 percent in total viewers.

* “Loser” gained 38 percent in adults 18-49, 43 percent in adults 25-54 and 23 percent or more than 1.6 million persons in total viewers from its first half-hour to its fourth. For its final half-hour from 9:30-10 p.m., “Biggest Loser” tied ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars” to rank #1 in adults 18-49. “Loser” ranked #1 outright in that half-hour, ahead of “Dancing,” in adults and women 18-34.

NBC ranked #2 in primetime Tuesday night in adults 18-49 and #1 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in adults and women 18-34 and women 18-49.

Ratings reflect “live plus same day” data unless otherwise noted. Season-to-date figures are averages of “live plus seven day” data except for the two most recent weeks, which are “live plus same day.”

Additional NBC highlights for the week of April 4-10

On Monday, April 4 from 9-10 p.m. ET, “The Event” (1.3 rating, 3 share in adults 18-49 and 4.1 million viewers overall) was up week-to-week by 8 percent in 18-49 rating (1.3 vs. 1.2). “The Event” built by 116 percent in 18-49 rating and 72 percent in total viewers on its lead-in from the previous hour – a 0.6/2 in 18-49 and 2.4 million viewers overall for a rebroadcast of “Chuck” from 8-9 p.m. These results for “The Event” are likely to increase substantially when Nielsen releases “live plus seven day” results for the week of April 4-10. Since its return to the schedule on March 7, “The Event” has added an average 44 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure.

Monday at 10 p.m. ET, “Harry’s Law” averaged a 1.4/3 in 18-49 and 7.7 million viewers overall. It’s worth noting that in its run so far this season, “Harry’s Law” has added an average 25 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure.

In its 12 weeks on the air, “Harry’s Law” has earned NBC’s 12 biggest overall audiences in the slot so far this season. The April 4 “Harry’s Law” was up 52 percent in total viewers (7.747 million vs. 5.103 million) versus NBC’s non-sports average in this slot during the traditional 2009-10 season.

On Tuesday, April 5 from 8-10 p.m. ET, “The Biggest Loser: Couples” (2.8/8 in adults 18-49, 7.6 million viewers overall) ranked #2 in adults 18-49 and #1 in adults 18-34, women 18-34 and women 18-49 in a time period that included competition from ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars,” CBS’s “NCIS” and “NCIS: LA” and Fox’s “Glee” encore. Week-to-week, “Loser” gained 4 percent in 18-49 rating (2.8 vs. 2.7) and 3 percent in total viewers (7.6 million vs. 7.3 million).

From its first half-hour to its fourth, “The Biggest Loser” grew 38 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 3.3 rating from a 2.4), 43 percent in adults 25-54 (4.0 vs. 2.8) and 23 percent or more than 1.6 million persons in total viewers (8.6 million vs. 7.0 million). For its final half-hour from 9:30-10 p.m., “Biggest Loser” tied ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars” to rank #1 in adults 18-49, eliminating the “Dancing” 9:30-10 margin of one week earlier which stood at 1.2 ratings points. “Loser” ranked #1 outright in the half-hour, ahead of “Dancing,” in adults and women 18-34.

Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET, “Parenthood” (1.9/5 in adults 18-49, 4.8 million viewers overall) ranked #1 in the time period among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults 18-34, men 18-34 and women 18-34 (tied). These “Parenthood” results are likely to increase substantially when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” ratings for the week of April 4-10. Through the first 26 weeks of the season, “Parenthood” added an average 41 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” ratings to its “live plus seven day” results, the #2 percentage increase among all primetime series on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW.

NBC ranked #2 in primetime Tuesday night in adults 18-49 and #1 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in adults and women 18-34 and women 18-49.

On Wednesday, April 6 from 8-9 p.m. ET, “Minute To Win It” averaged a 1.0/3 in adults 18-49 and 3.3 million viewers overall in a highly competitive time period opposite Fox’s “American Idol,” CBS’s “Survivor,” ABC’s “The Middle” encores and CW’s “America’s Next Top Model.”

From 9-10 p.m., an encore telecast of “Law & Order: SVU” averaged a 1.0/2 in 18-49 and 3.7 million viewers overall. From its first half-hour to its second, the “SVU” rebroadcast grew by 83 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 1.1 from a 0.8) and by 46 percent in total viewers (to 4.4 million from 3.0 million).

Wednesday from 10-11 p.m. ET, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2.4/6 in adults 18-49, 8.5 million viewers overall) ranked #1 in the time period in adults, men and women 18-49 and other key demographics. “SVU” built on its lead-in from the encore telecast in the previous hour by 140 percent in 18-49 rating and by 122 percent or more than 4.5 million persons in total viewers.

From its first half-hour to its second, “SVU” grew in all key ratings categories, including increases of 18 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 2.6 rating from a 2.2), 15 percent in adults 25-54 (to 3.1 from 2.7) and 12 percent in total viewers (to 8.8 million from 7.8 million). In the 10:30 p.m. lead-in to local news, “SVU” posted an 11 percent margin of victory in the key news demo of adults 25-54 (with a 3.1 rating vs. a 2.8 for CBS’s second-place “Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior”) after CBS led the prior half-hour by 19 percent (3.2 vs. 2.7). “SVU” led the 10:30 p.m. half-hour in all key ratings categories – adults, men and women 18-49, 18-34 and 25-54, plus total viewers.

On Thursday, April 7 at 8 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Community” averaged a 0.8/3 in adults 18-49 and 2.2 million viewers overall. At 8:30 p.m., “Perfect Couples” (1.0/3 in 18-49, 2.2 million viewers overall) built on its lead-in from the “Community” rebroadcast by 25 percent in adults 18-49 and 38 percent in adults 18-34 (with a 1.1 rating vs. a 0.8).

Thursday from 9-9:31 p.m. ET, a rebroadcast of “The Office” (1.7/5 in adults 18-49, 3.6 million viewers overall) grew versus the prior week’s encore telecast by 13 percent in 18-49 rating (1.7 vs. 1.5) and 11 percent in total viewers (3.594 million vs. 3.234 million).

From 9:31-10 p.m., an encore telecast of “Parks and Recreation” (1.4/4 in 18-49, 2.9 million viewers overall) was up versus its rebroadcast in this slot one week earlier by 27 percent in 18-49 rating (1.4 vs. 1.1) and 22 percent in total viewers (2.878 million vs. 2.351 million). In adults 18-49 and total viewers this is the top-scoring “Parks” encore among three rebroadcasts this season to-date. .

Thursday from 10-10:31 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “30 Rock” (1.3/3 in adults 18-49, 2.7 million viewers overall) grew versus the prior week’s encore by 30 percent in 18-49 rating and 25 percent in total viewers (2.669 million vs. 2.140 million). In the time period, “30 Rock” ranked #2 among ABC, CBS and NBC in every key ratings category – adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54, plus total viewers.

Thursday from 10:31-11 p.m. ET, “Outsourced” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 3.0 million viewers overall) matched its 18-49 lead-in from a “30 Rock” encore and built by 11 percent in total viewers on its lead-in. “Outsourced” ranked #2 in the time period among ABC, CBS and NBC in every key ratings category – adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54, plus total viewers.

On Friday, April 8 from 8-9 p.m. ET, “Who Do You Think You Are?” (1.3/4 in 18-49, 5.7 million viewers overall) ranked #1 in its time period among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in adults 18-49, adults 18-34, adults 25-54, total viewers and other key categories. “Who Do You Think You Are?” matched its highest 18-49 rating in eight weeks (since February 11).

Friday from 9-11 p.m. ET, “Dateline NBC” reported a 1.3/4 in 18-49 and 5.5 million viewers overall. “Dateline” ranked #2 in the time period in total viewers.

On Saturday, April 9 at 8 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Harry’s Law” (0.6/2 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall) improved on the prior week’s 18-49 rating in this time period by 50 percent (0.6 vs. 0.4), earning “Harry’s” highest 18-49 rating in this slot in four weeks (since March 12). At 9 p.m., a rebroadcast of “Law & Order: LA” (0.7/2 in 18-49, 3.8 million viewers overall) tracked down the show’s highest 18-49 rating in this time period in four weeks (since March 12), growing from its first half-hour to its second by 17 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 0.7 from a 0.6) and 15 percent in total viewers (4.060 million vs. 3.522 million).

Saturday from 10-11 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 5.1 million viewers overall) locked up the show’s highest 18-49 rating in this time period in five weeks (since March 5). “Law & Order: SVU” was the hour’s top non-sports choice among ABC, CBS and NBC in adults 18-49. “SVU” built on its lead-in by 71 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 1.2 from a 0.7) and by 36 percent in total viewers (5.141 million vs. 3.791 million).

“Law & Order: SVU” was the #1 non-sports telecast in primetime Saturday on ABC, CBS and NBC in adults 18-49.

On Sunday, April 10 from 7-8 p.m. ET, “Dateline NBC” averaged a 0.9/3 in 18-49 and 4.3 million viewers overall). “Dateline” grew from its first half-hour to its second by 13 percent in adults 18-49 (0.9 vs. 0.8) and 9 percent in adults 25-54 (1.2 vs. 1.1).

Sunday from 8-9 p.m. ET, “America’s Next Great Restaurant” averaged a 1.2/4 in 18-49 and 3.5 million viewers overall. “America’s Next Great Restaurant” grew from its first half-hour to its second in all key ratings categories, including gains of 18 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 1.3 rating from a 1.1), 23 percent in adults 25-54 (1.6 vs. 1.3) and 22 percent in adults 18-34 (1.1 vs. 0.9). “Restaurant” built on its lead-in from the previous hour by 33 percent in adults 18-49.

Sunday from 9-11 p.m. ET, “The Celebrity Apprentice” (3.0/8 in 18-49, 8.2 million viewers overall) was up versus the same night last year by 15 percent in 18-49 rating (3.0 vs. a 2.6 on April 11, 2010) and up 22 percent or 1.5 million persons in total viewers (8.233 million vs. 6.726 million). In its two-hour time period, “Celebrity Apprentice” ranked #2 among ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-49 and was #1 in adults 25-54 (tied), women 18-49 and women 25-54.

“Celebrity Apprentice” generated steady growth throughout its two-hour time period, increasing 36 percent in 18-49 rating from its first half-hour to its fourth (to a 3.4 from a 2.5) and adding 34 percent or 2.4 million persons in total viewers (to 9.4 million from 7.0 million).

“Celebrity Apprentice” dominated the final 10-11 p.m. ET hour of primetime in key demographics, ranking #1 in adults, men and women 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54. The 3.2 rating for “Celebrity Apprentice” in adults 18-49 from 10-11 p.m. ET is the highest 10-11 p.m. rating of the week with entertainment programming on ABC, CBS or NBC.

“Celebrity Apprentice” was up 67 percent in 18-49 rating (3.0 vs. 1.8, “live plus same day”) and 35 percent in total viewers (8.233 million vs. 6.103 million) versus NBC’s non-sports average in this time period earlier this season prior to the “Apprentice” debut.

NBC’s Sunday primetime built steadily throughout the night, more than quadrupling in 18-49 rating (to a 3.4/9 from a 0.8/3) and more than doubling in total viewers (to 9.410 million from 4.267 million) from the first to the final half-hour of primetime.
