Week 34: NBC paced by 'The Voice' No. 3 primetime

Paced this week by “The Voice,” which was the #3 primetime show of the week in adults 18-49, NBC averaged a 1.7 rating, 5 share in adults 18-49 and 5.1 million viewers overall for the week of May 9-15, according to in-home viewing figures from Nielsen Media Research.


“The Voice” ranked #3 among all primetime programs for the week in adults 18-49, behind only the two editions of “American Idol.” “The Voice” ranked among the top 10 programs of the week in every key demographic measure – adults, men and women 18-49; adults, men and women 18-34; and adults, men and women 25-54 – as well as teens 12-17.

Also ranking among the top programs of the week in adults 18-49 were “The Office” (#12, tied), “The Biggest Loser” (#23, tied), “The Celebrity Apprentice” (#26, tied) and “Law & Order: SVU” and “Parks and Recreation” (#29, tied).

Primetime averages for the week of May 9-15 in adults 18-49 were Fox (2.8/8), ABC and CBS (2.4/7), NBC (1.7/5) and CW (0.9/3). In overall total viewers the weekly averages were CBS (10.5 million), ABC (8.9 million), Fox (8.4 million), NBC (5.1 million) and CW (1.9 million).

NBC highlights for the week of May 9-15:

* On Tuesday, “The Voice” scored the highest 18-49 rating of the night, topping every other single hour on television and besting such formidable primetime rivals as “Glee,” “NCIS,” “Dancing With the Stars” and all other primetime programming on broadcast or cable.

* “The Voice” won the Tuesday 10 p.m. ET hour among the broadcast networks in all key demos, outscoring the ABC-CBS original drama competition combined in adults, men and women 18-49 and adults, men and women 18-34. In the key demo of adults 18-49, “The Voice” prevailed by a 124 percent margin over its closest broadcast competitor.

* From its first half-hour to its second, “The Voice” grew in every key ratings category in an hour when viewership levels were dropping significantly. Versus its lead-in from the prior hour, “The Voice” surged by 62 percent in adult 18-49 rating and 40 percent in total viewers.

* Through three telecasts, “The Voice” is the season’s #1 new series in adults 18-49 and ranks behind only “American Idol” among all entertainment series on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW.

* NBC ranked #1 in primetime Tuesday night versus all broadcast and cable competition in adults, men and women 18-49. This marks NBC’s third consecutive Tuesday win in adults 18-49.

* On Wednesday, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” ranked #1 among the broadcast networks in adults 18-49, adults 18-34, adults 25-54 and most other key demographics. “SVU” grew from its first half-hour to its second in all key ratings categories, including gains of by 13 percent in adults 18-49 and 8 percent in total viewers, while competing first-run programming on ABC and CBS declined half-hour to half-hour in both measures.

* On Thursday, “The Office” was the #2 scripted program of the night in adults 18-49. In its highly competitive time period, “The Office” ranked #2 among the broadcast networks in adults 18-49 and #1 in adults, men and women 18-34 and men 18-49.

* Also on Thursday, “Community” matched its highest 18-49 rating since March 24 in a tough time period opposite Fox’s “American Idol,” CBS’s “Big Bang Theory,” ABC’s “Wipeout” and CW’s “Vampire Diaries.”

* On Sunday, “The Celebrity Apprentice” generated steady growth throughout its two-hour time period, increasing by 17 percent in 18-49 rating from its first half-hour to its fourth and by 15 percent in total viewers in a tough time period that included competition from Fox’s “Family Guy,” the season finale of ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” and the season finale of CBS’s “Survivor.”

“Celebrity Apprentice” built on its lead-in from the 8-9 p.m. hour by 178 percent in 18-49 rating and 99 percent in total viewers.

Ratings reflect “live plus same day” data unless otherwise noted. Season-to-date figures are averages of “live plus seven day” data except for the two most recent weeks, which are “live plus same day.”

Additional NBC highlights for the week of May 9-15

On Monday, May 9 from 8-9 p.m. ET, “Chuck” (1.4 rating, 4 share and 4.1 million viewers overall) matched its highest 18-49 rating since March 21 in a highly competitive time period opposite ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars,” Fox’s “House” and CBS’s “How I Met Your Mother.” It’s worth noting that through the first 31 weeks of the season, “Chuck” has added an average 26 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure.

Monday from 9-10 p.m. ET, “The Event” averaged a 1.1/3 in 18-49 and 3.8 million viewers overall. These results for “The Event” are likely to increase substantially when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results for the week of May 9-15 – through the first 31 weeks of the season, “The Event” has gained an average 39 percent in adults 18-49 when going from its “live plus same day” ratings to its “live plus seven day” results, the #1 increase on a percentage basis for any first-year series and the fifth biggest increase for any primetime series on ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox or CW.

Monday from 10-11 p.m. ET, “Law & Order: LA” averaged a 1.2/3 in adults 18-49 and 5.1 million viewers overall. From its first half-hour to its second, “Law & Order: LA” increased by 18 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 1.3 rating from a 1.1), 20 percent in adults 25-54 (1.8 vs. 1.5) and 14 percent in total viewers (5.382 million vs. 4.731 million), while rival dramas on ABC and CBS declined half-hour to half-hour in all three measures. Week-to-week, “Law & Order: LA” grew 4 percent in total viewers (to 5.056 million from 4.852 million).

On Tuesday, May 10 from 8-10 p.m. ET, “The Biggest Loser: Couples” averaged a 2.6/8 in 18-49 and 7.0 million viewers overall in a highly competitive time period competing with Fox’s “Glee,” ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars” and CBS’s “NCIS” and “NCIS: LA.” From its first half-hour to its fourth, “Loser” gained 43 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 3.3 from a 2.3) and 28 percent or 1.8 million persons in total viewers (8.2 million vs. 6.4 million).

Tuesday from 10-11 p.m. ET, “The Voice” (4.7/12 share in adults 18-49, 10.5 million viewers overall) delivered the highest 18-49 rating of the night on Tuesday, topping every other single hour on television and besting such formidable primetime rivals as “Glee,” “NCIS,” “Dancing With the Stars” and all other primetime programming on broadcast or cable.

“The Voice” won the 10 p.m. ET hour among the broadcast networks by a 124 percent margin in adults 18-49 (4.7 vs. a 2.1 for ABC’s second-place “Body of Proof”). “The Voice” won the hour in all key demographics, outscoring ABC and CBS combined in adults, men and women 18-49 and adults, men and women 18-34.

From its first half-hour to its second, “The Voice” grew in every key ratings category in an hour when viewership levels were dropping significantly. Versus its lead-in from the prior 9-10 p.m. ET hour of “Biggest Loser,” “The Voice” grew by 62 percent in 18-49 rating (4.7 vs. 2.9) and 40 percent or nearly 3.0 million persons in total viewers (10.5 million vs. 7.5 million).

Versus NBC’s season average for the Tuesday 10-11 p.m. ET hour prior to the debut of “The Voice,” the week-three telecast of “The Voice” was up 104 percent in adults 18-49 (with a 4.7 rating vs. a 2.3, live plus same day) and up 70 percent in total viewers (10.450 million vs. 6.149 million).

Versus NBC’s season average for the Tuesday 10-11 p.m. ET hour prior to the debut of “The Voice,” the first three weeks of “The Voice” are up in the hour by 130 percent in adults 18-49 (with a 5.3 rating vs. a 2.3, live plus same day) and 92 percent in total viewers (11.835 million vs. 6.149 million).

NBC ranked #1 in primetime Tuesday night versus all broadcast and cable competition in adults, men and women 18-49. This marks NBC’s third consecutive Tuesday win in adults 18-49.

On Wednesday, May 11 from 8-9 p.m. ET, “Minute To Win It” averaged a 0.9/3 in 18-49 and 3.1 million viewers overall in a highly competitive time period opposite Fox’s “American Idol,” CBS’s “Survivor” and ABC’s “The Middle.”

Wednesday from 9-10 p.m. ET, an encore “Minute To Win It” averaged a 1.1/3 in 18-49 and 3.6 million viewers overall in another competitive slot opposite Fox’s “American Idol” and “Breaking In,” CBS’s “Criminal Minds” and ABC’s “Modern Family.” The “Minute” rebroadcast grew from its first half-hour to its second in all key measures, including gains of 44 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 1.3 rating from a 0.9), 50 percent in adults 25-54 (1.5 vs. 1.0) and 61 percent in total viewers (4.416 million vs. 2.748 million).

Wednesday from 10-11 p.m. ET, “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (2.4/7 in adults 18-49, 8.1 million viewers overall) ranked #1 among the broadcast networks in adults 18-49, adults 18-34, adults 25-54 and most other key demographics. “SVU” built on its lead-in by 118 percent in 18-49 rating and 126 percent in total viewers.

From its first half-hour to its second, “SVU” grew in all key ratings categories, including gains of 13 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 2.6 rating from a 2.3) and 8 percent in total viewers (8.425 million vs. 7.775 million), while competing first-run programming on ABC and CBS declined half-hour to half-hour in both measures.

Through the first 31 weeks of the season, “Law & Order: SVU” has added an average 30 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure

On Thursday, May 12 at 8 p.m. ET, “Community” (1.5/5 in adults 18-49, 3.3 million viewers overall) matched its highest 18-49 rating since March 24 in a highly competitive time period opposite Fox’s “American Idol,” CBS’s “Big Bang Theory,” ABC’s “Wipeout” and CW’s “Vampire Diaries.” Through the first 31 weeks of the season, “Community” has added an average 27 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure

At 8:30 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “The Office” delivered a 1.3/4 in 18-49 and 2.7 million viewers overall, up 18 percent in 18-49 rating versus last week’s rebroadcast in this time period (1.3 vs. 1.1).

Thursday from 9-9:31 p.m. ET, “The Office” (3.3/9 in adults 18-49, 6.4 million viewers overall) was the #2 scripted program of the night in adults 18-49, one tenth of a rating point behind CBS’s “Big Bang Theory” (a 3.4 from 8-8:30 p.m.) and topping such Thursday primetime rivals as ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” (a 3.2 from 9-10:01 p.m.) and Fox’s “Bones” (a 3.2 from 9:02-10:01 p.m.), which benefitted from an “American Idol” lead-in. In its time period, “The Office” ranked #2 among the broadcast networks in adults 18-49 and #1 in adults, men and women 18-34 and men 18-49.

These results for “The Office” are likely to increase substantially when Nielsen issues “live plus seven day” results for the week of May 9-15. Through the first 31 weeks of the season, “The Office” added an average 33 percent to its 18-49 rating when going from the previously reported “live plus same day” rating to its “live plus seven day” figure. In total viewers, The Office” on average gains 28 percent or 2.1 million viewers (to 9.4 million from 7.3 million).

From 9:31-10:01 p.m. ET, “Parks and Recreation” (2.4/6 in 18-49, 4.5 million viewers overall) ranked #2 among ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and CW in adults 18-34 and #1 in men 18-34 and men 18-49.

Thursday from 10:01-10:31 p.m. ET, a second episode of “Parks and Recreation” delivered a 2.0/5 in adults 18-49 and 3.5 million viewers overall). In the time period, “Parks” ranked #1 among the broadcast networks in adults and men 18-34. From 10:31-11 p.m. ET, “Outsourced” averaged a 1.5/4 in adults 18-49 and 3.0 million viewers overall. “Outsourced” ranked #1 in the half-hour among ABC, CBS and NBC in men 18-34.

On Friday, May 13 from 8-9 p.m. ET, “Friday Night Lights” averaged a 0.8/3 in 18-49 and 2.9 million viewers overall.

Friday from 9-11 p.m. ET, “Dateline NBC” averaged a 1.4/4 in 18-49 and 5.9 million viewers overall. From its first half-hour to its fourth, “Dateline” grew by 45 percent in adults 18-49 (to a 1.6 rating from a 1.1), 38 percent in adults 25-54 (2.2 vs. 1.6) and 27 percent or 1.4 million persons in total viewers (6.5 million vs. 5.1 million.

On Saturday, May 14 from 8:13-9 p.m. ET, “Chase” averaged a
 0.6/2 in 18-49 and 2.6 million viewers overall. Note: Golf coverage ran in some markets from 8-8:13 p.m. ET.

Saturday at 9 p.m. ET, a rebroadcast of “Law & Order: LA” averaged a 0.8/3 in 18-49 and 3.8 million viewers, delivering its highest results in both measures in four weeks (since April 16).

Saturday from 10-11 p.m. ET, an encore telecast of “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 5.0 million viewers overall) matched the show’s highest Saturday rebroadcast rating in 10 weeks (since March 5). From its first half-hour to its second, “SVU” grew by 18 percent in 18-49 rating (1.3 vs. 1.1) and by 10 percent in total viewers (5.3 million vs. 4.8 million).

On Sunday, May 15 from 7:32-8 p.m. ET, “Dateline NBC” averaged a 1.0/3 in 18-49 and 4.0 million viewers overall. Note: Golf coverage ran in some markets from 7-7:32 p.m.

From 8-9 p.m. ET, “Minute To Win It” averaged a 0.9/2 in 18-49 and 3.4 million viewers overall. “Minute” increased from its first half-hour to its second in all key ratings categories, including gains of 38 percent in 18-49 rating (to a 1.1 from a 0.8) and 25 percent in total viewers (3.800 million vs. 3.052 million).

Sunday from 9-11 p.m. ET, “The Celebrity Apprentice” (2.5/6 in 18-49, 6.8 million viewers overall) generated steady growth throughout its two-hour time period, increasing by 17 percent in 18-49 rating from its first half-hour to its fourth (to a 2.7 from a 2.3) and by 15 percent in total viewers (to 7.4 million from 6.4 million) in a time period that included competition from Fox’s “Family Guy,” the season finale of ABC’s “Desperate Housewives” and the season finale of CBS’s “Survivor.”
