Week 39: ABC airs 3 of the week's Top 10 non-sports

Overall: During the week of 6/13/11, ABC delivered 3 of the Top 10 non-sports TV programs among Adults 18-49:  The Bachelorette – #6, Wipeout SP – #9 and Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition – #10.  In addition, ABC’s The Bachelorette (#7) placed among the Top 10 most-watched TV shows overall for the week.  The ABC News Special: Caught in the Act on Wednesday registered as the week’s #1 primetime news program among Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54.


Monday: With The Bachelorette and Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, ABC led it nearest competition on Monday night by 1.2 million viewers (CBS) and by 15% among Adults 18-49 (NBC with the Stanley Cup Finals Game 6).  Continuing its winning streaks on the evening, ABC registered as Monday’s most-watched television net for the 14th week in a row and ranked #1 in Adults 18-49 for the 10th consecutive week.  The is delivering its longest Total Viewer winning streak on the evening in nearly 14 years – since a streak that ran from w/o 9/1/97 – w/o 12/22/97. 

At 8pm, ABC’s The Bachelorette won its time slot for the 4th week running, topping 2nd place NBC in the 2-hour time period by 46% in Total Viewers (CBS) and by 26% in Adults 18-49 (NBC).   Building its numbers from its first to second hour, from 9-10pm, ABC’s The Bachelorette defeated Fox’s Master Chef by wide margins in viewers (+2.9 million) and Adults 18-49 (+25%).  Monday’s #1 TV show in viewers and young adults, ABC’s The Bachelorette registered as Monday’s most-watched show overall for the 3rd week running. 

Up against the final hour of NBC’s Stanley Cup coverage, ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition ranked #1 in the 10 o’clock hour for the 3rd week in a row across all key Women demographics (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54). 

The new ABC unscripted series continued to exhibit strong retention lead-in among Adults 18-34 (89%) and Adults 18-49 (83%).  Gaining audience throughout its broadcast, EM: Weight Loss increased by 7% in viewers and by 11% in young adults from its first half-hour to its second half-hour.  ABC’s EM: Weight Loss continued to improve its hour year to year, up by 11% in Total Viewers and by 5% in Adults 18-49 over original programming on the year-ago night. 

Wednesday: With 4 comedy repeats and the ABC News Special: Caught in the Act, ABC was up year to year for the 3rd consecutive Wednesday this summer, surging over the year-ago evening (6/16/10) by 1.3 million viewers and by 56% in Adults 18-49 with the same mix of repeat and original programming. 

In addition, the Net grew its numbers week to week in both Total Viewers (+10%) and Adults 18-49 (+8%).  In the 9 o’clock hour, back-to-back repeat telecasts of ABC’s Modern Family beat out CBS’ replay Criminal Minds by 15% in Adults 18-49. 

In fact, ABC’s 9pm repeat Modern Family stood as Wednesday’s #1 scripted show on the major nets in the key young adult sales demo. Building on its lead-in against the high-rated deciding Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals during the 10 o’clock hour, the ABC News Special: Caught in the Act finished as the #1 non-sports program in key Adult demos (AD18-49/AD25-54).  The program, anchored by Chris Cuomo, showcased incredible events all caught on tape. The ABC News special attracted the Net’s biggest audience in the time period in over 4 months and qualified as its 2nd largest summer audience in the hour since 2009 – since 2/9/11 and 9/2/09, respectively.

Thursday: With its repeat line-up of back-to-back installments of Wipeout into Rookie Blue, ABC nearly tied Fox — with its season premiere of So You Think You Can Dance Results Show in the opening hour of the night — for #1 on Thursday in Adults 18-49 (pacing within 1-tenth of a rating point and tied in audience share).  In addition, ABC ranked #1 on the night with Men 18-49 and led the broadcast pack with Teens 12-17 and Kids 2-11. 

During the 8 o’clock hour, ABC’s rebroadcast Wipeout ran #2 to Fox’s original So You Think You Can Dance in Adults 18-49.   The broad-appealing ABC unscripted series was the dominant broadcast program with Kids 2-11, beating Fox’s dancing results show premiere by 55%.  Wipeout generated the series’ most-watched replay in the time period this season.  In the 9 o’clock hour, a second repeat of ABC’s Wipeout moved up to a definitive #1 in Adults 18-49, beating CBS’ replay CSI by an impressive 62%. 

Overall, the Wipeout replay stood as the #2 TV show of the night in the key young adult sales demo, almost tying Fox’s first-run Dance for the lead (pacing within 1-tenth of a rating point). In Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, Wipeout scored season-high repeat numbers. In the 10pm hour, ABC’s repeat Rookie Blue outdrew NBC’s original drama (Love Bites) by 1.2 million viewers.  Rookie Blue matched its highest repeat Adult 18-49 number and hit new repeat highs with key Men (M18-34/M18-49).

Friday: During the 8 o’clock hour, ABC’s rebroadcast Shark Tank finished #1 against its rivals in Adults 18-49, beating CBS’ original Flashpoint by a solid 38%, NBC’s original Friday Night Lights by 22% and Fox’s replay Bones by 22%.

The broad-appealing ABC unscripted series also ranked #1 against its network rivals in the hour with Men 18-49, Women 18-49 and Teens 12-17. Overall, the Shark Tank replay stood as the #2 TV show of the night in the key young adult sales demo, behind only NBC’s first-run Dateline. Shark Tank matched its highest-ever repeat Adult 18-49 number and hit new repeat highs with Women 18-49.

Sunday: Up against NBC’s U.S. Open Golf overrun in the 7 o’clock hour, ABC’s repeat America’s Funniest Home Videos beat out replays of CBS’ 60 Minutes by 22% and Fox’s animated comedies by 38% (American Dad/Bob’s Burgers) in Adults 18-49. 

The rebroadcast of ABC’s wide-appealing video-clip show ranked #1 in the hour with Women 18-49 and was the top-rated broadcast program with Teens 12-17 and Kids 2-11.  Building on its lead-in during the 10pm hour, ABC’s repeat Body of Proof defeated CBS’ repeat The Good Wife by wide margins in Total Viewers (+28%) and Adults 18-49 (+20%), despite the CBS drama’s decided lead-in advantage coming out of the final hour of the Daytime Emmy Awards.
