Overall: During the week of July 11, 2011, ABC aired 4 of the Top 20 TV shows of the week in Adults 18-49: The Bachelorette – #5, Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition – #15, Wipeout-THURS – #17 and Wipeout-Tues – #20. ABC aired the #1 newsmagazine for the 4th week in a row in the key young adult sales demo, delivering the week’s Top 2 newsmagazines with an encore Primetime: What Would You Do? and 20/20, respectively.
Monday: As its winning combo of The Bachelorette and Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition returned to originals, after airing repeats the prior week (4th of July), ABC marked a first-place finish on Monday night in Total Viewers, outdelivering its nearest broadcast competitor by 2.3 million viewers (NBC). ABC dominated its network competition by 33% among Adults 18-49 (Fox).
In Total Viewers, ABC has been the #1 network on every regular Monday of Summer 2011 (excluding only July 4th). At 8pm, ABC’s The Bachelorette won its time period for its 7th straight regular telecast, defeating its closest broadcast competition in the 2-hour time period by 59% in Total Viewers (NBC) and by 44% in Adults 18-49 (Fox).
In addition, the unscripted program hit season-highs with Adults 18-34 and Women 18-34. Monday’s #1 TV show in Total Viewers, ABC’s The Bachelorette registered as the night’s most-watched show overall for its 6th regular telecast in a row. ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition beat its network rivals by wide margins in Adults 18-49, leading runner-up NBC’s original drama (Law & Order: Los Angeles) by an impressive 90%. In addition, the ABC unscripted series won its hour for the 6th consecutive first-run broadcast across all key Women demographics (W18-34/W18-49/W25-54). ABC’s EM: Weight Loss Edition once again improved its hour year to year. On average, the new unscripted series is boosting the hour for ABC by 13% in Total Viewers, by 10% in Adults 18-49 and by 19% in Adults 18-34 over the comparable nights last year with originals of True Beauty.
Tuesday: Opposite Fox’s coverage of the 2011 MLB All-Star Game from 8-9pm, ABC’s repeat Wipeout built over the prior week’s repeat by 6% in Total Viewers and by 6% in Adults 18-49, scoring summer-high repeat numbers in the hour.
The replay Wipeout was the top-rated broadcast show in the hour with Kids 2-11. Despite airing against the second hour of the All-Star Game from 9-10pm, ABC’s 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show produced impressive year-to-year improvement for ABC in the hour in viewers (+24%) and young adults (+23%) from the same night last year (7/13/10) with an original Downfall. 101 Ways to Leave a Game Show built on its lead-in in Men 18-34 and Teens 12-17.
Thursday: ABC finished a strong #2 on Thursday in Adults 18-49 and Total Viewers to a Big Brother-fueled CBS, while topping its broadcast rivals in Teens 12-17 and Kids 2-11. ABC’s Wipeout won Thursday’s 8 o’clock hour in Total Viewers and Adults 18-49 for the 4th week in a row, beating its unscripted time period competition on Fox (So You Think You Can Dance) by 1.2 million viewers and by 6% in young adults.
The ABC unscripted show also topped the hour in key Men demos (M18-49/M25-54) and qualified as the top-rated broadcast show on Thursday in Teens 12-17 and Kids 2-11. At 9pm, ABC’s Expedition Impossible took second among the major nets in the hour in both Total Viewers and Adults 18-49, behind CBS’ Big Brother 13, while finishing as the hour’s #1 broadcast program in Teens 12-17. During the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s Rookie Blue scored a first place win in Adults 18-49 for the 4th straight week, outdrawing NBC’s Love Bites by 3.3 million viewers and dominating the NBC original drama by 100% in the key young adult demo.
The ABC sophomore drama also finished #1 in the hour with Adults 25-54. Rookie Blue improved its time period year to year for ABC, topping an original airing of Boston Med on the same night last summer (7/15/10) by 13% in viewers and by 8% in Adults 18-49.
Friday: ABC stood as the #1 network on Friday among the major nets in Adults 18-49 for the 2nd straight week, beating CBS by 9%, NBC by 20% and Fox by 50%. At 8pm, ABC’s repeat Shark Tank ranked #1 in time period versus its network rivals in Adults 18-49, beating NBC’s Friday Night Lights series finale by 50% and Fox’s replay Bones by 50%, and stood as the hour’s top-rated broadcast program in Teens 12-17.
Shark Tank generated its largest-ever repeat audience and matched its highest-ever Adult 18-49 repeat number. ABC’s encore Primetime: What Would You Do? stood as Friday’s #1 show among the major nets in Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34.
Sunday: ABC’s repeat America’s Funniest Home Videos once again finished #1 during Sunday’s 7 o’clock hour in Adults 18-49, defeating Fox’s replay animated comedies by 38% (American Dad/’Bob’s Burgers) and NBC’s encore Dateline by 38%. ABC’s video-clip show was the highest-rated broadcast program in the hour with Teens 12-17 and Kids 2-11 for the 2nd straight week. At 8pm, ABC’s replay Extreme Makeover: Home Edition outdrew Fox’s repeat animated comedies (The Simpsons/The Cleveland Show) by 23% in Total Viewers and topped its unscripted repeat competition on NBC (America’s Got Talent) by 11% in Adults 18-49. During the 10 o’clock hour, ABC’s encore Body of Proof drew a larger overall audience than NBC’s original Marriage Ref (+28%) for the 2nd consecutive head-to-head telecast.
