WGN getting FM 87.7 in Chicago

WGN-AM 720Tribune’s WGN-AM has reached an agreement to run 87.7 FM through an LMA and will launch a new format on Monday afternoon (2/17). The deal is with LA-based Venture Technologies Group, which owns the frequency, will run through September 2015, when the FCC shuts down all analog LPTV stations. Of course, 87.7 is VHF Channel 6 audio. The new calls will be WGWG-LP.

The announcement dovetails with the end of an alternative music simulcast currently being simulcast with Cumulus’ WKQX 101.1 FM there–which was LMA’d from Merlin Media last month.  While the new format has not been revealed, The Chicago Tribune reports that Jonathon Brandmeier will host the morning show.
