A ‘Militia’ Brings A New FM To A Town Ready To Lose One

Take a drive on I-76 through Somerset, Pa., or head west on I-68 from Cumberland, Md., and chances are you’ll be able to tune to a 630-watt Class A FM playing Classic Hits. As of August 9, one can also likely receive the Class A signal of a new FM broadcasting at 89.1 MHz.

Only, it’s not a “new” station. Rather, a preexisting low-power FM at 102.3 MHz has completed its upgrade. It’s an important one, it appears, as the commercially licensed FM — WQZS-FM 93.3 in Meyersdale, Pa. — will likely see its licensed revoked by the Commission now that a hearing on the matter has been dismissed by the FCC Administrative Law Judge.
