Hispanic broadcast giant Univision wasted no time severing its ties with Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump following his remarks on Mexican immigrants, in particular abandoning its planned broadcast of the Miss Universe pageant. Meanwhile, Trump partner NBC is weighing its options.
NBC co-owns Miss Universe with Trump.
The network stated that it does not share Trump’s opinions, but stopped short of abandoning the pageant, which is only about two weeks away. It’s scheduled to take place 7/12/15.
Univision’s decision goes beyond protesting Trump’s remarks on behalf of its audience. A very high percentage of its workforce is Hispanic.
Trump says that the contract between the pageant and Univision did not provide for the group’s exit and has threatened to sue.
The Miss Universe situation gives NBC a second Trump issue. It also has to decide on whether or not to include him in plans for the next season of “Celebrity Apprentice,” due to the fact that Trump’s candidacy raises equal time issues.
Fox News has already axed a weekly Trump appearance on “Fox and Friends” for that reason.
