With ‘JCPA’ Erased from National Defense Authorization Act, What’s Next?

The quest for legislation that would exempt newspapers, broadcasters and other publishers from antitrust laws so they may collectively negotiate with “Big Tech” for payment of their work across social media may take a little bit longer for supporters ranging from Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) to every state broadcast association and the NAB.


The National Defense Authorization Act, released Tuesday evening, did not note the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act across its mammoth 4,408-page text. This sets up a do-or-die scenario for the legislation that Klobuchar spent months seeking to emerge from the Senate Judiciary Committee.
