Geena Davis is a world famous actress, and she’s also the force behind the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. It is working to improve the lot of women on both sides of the camera and in scripts as well, and is about to hold its third Symposium on the topic.
The event will be held 11/13/12 in Beverly Hills CA.
“The Symposium will bring together leading CEOs, executives and content creators from both commercial and public television, and feature and documentary film, to showcase best practices on how to increase representation and create diverse portrayals of women and girls in popular media,” stated the event’s organizers.
Commenting on a new study of gender roles and occupations of women in both televison and film being presented by Dr. Stacy Smith ,Davis said, “The results of this groundbreaking study will center the day’s conversation on how female characters ar portrayed, and dramatically absent from critical career occupations such as politics, corporate leadership and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers. This data will provide great insights on opportunities for the entertainment community to greatly influence and inspire our children to consider non-stereotypical career paths.”
There will be related sessions on children’s and general audience programming.
