WTMM-FM Albany host Bruce Jacobs in trouble for gay slurs

The Townsquare Media station host is in a bit of hot water after referring to two WNBA teams as the “Los Angeles Lesbians” and the “Phoenix Dyke-ury.” The teams are actually the LA Sparks and Phoenix Mercury.

Jacobs  has since apologized for his homophobic comments, but there is still a lot of pressure for Jacobs to resign or be fired by the station, an ESPN Radio affiliate (ESPN Radio 104.5 The Team).

“My comments yesterday were ridiculous, stupid and amateurish,” Jacobs told listeners on Wednesday during a lengthy apology. “I apologize for even uttering the comments, whether you heard them or not, whether you were offended or not.”

A Facebook page, “Get ESPN Radio’s Bruce Jacobs Off of the Air for Gay Slurs,” has gotten likes and comments about Jacobs’ behavior. The page calls for Jacobs’ removal, but he told the Albany Times-Union that he doesn’t think he should be fired for his comments: “We live in a society today where no matter what you say, you’re a bigot or you’re a racist. I don’t like it, but it comes with the territory. So obviously I think that’s ridiculous.”

A WTMM spokesperson told the Albany Times-Union that the comments are a “serious matter that is being dealt with internally.”

This isn’t the first time that Jacobs has come under fire for controversial remarks, said the paper. In 2008, he received a lot of heat for criticizing Julie Erfle, the widow of a Phoenix police officer. Jacobs told his listeners that Erfle’s support of immigration law reform would be partially to blame for the next time a police officer, like her husband, was gunned down.
