Not long after the announcement that ESPN Radio will be shuttered in Pittsburgh for Radio Disney, Red Zebra Broadcasting has pulled ESPN Deportes from its WXTR-AM 730 DC outlet and flipped it to Oldies, “730 WXTR: DC’s Greatest Hits.” Rick Carmean, Red Zebra EVP/Sales tells RBR-TVBR the syndicator is Citadel’s ABC Classic Hits. Why the switch? “We felt there was a void in the marketplace and this might be a place where we can capture a decent share.”
Indeed, the closest thing in the market is Clear Channels’ WBIG, “Big 100,” but that leans heavily to Classic Rock rather than Oldies. Also, many listeners still miss the “Big AM Sound” that many stations used to deliver with these songs. We’ll keep an eye on the station to see where the ratings take it.
