An Urban One Board Member Supports ‘ZoneCasting’

On July 21, a collection of independent broadcasters wrote to NAB President/CEO Curtis LeGeyt. They had one goal in mind: to convince the broadcast media industry’s biggest lobbyist Inside The Beltway to amend its position on a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would allow the voluntary use of GeoBroadcast Services’ “ZoneCasting” offering across the U.S.

In a statement, the NAB said that it, along with state broadcasters associations from across the U.S. “and an overwhelming number of large and small radio broadcasters in a diverse range of markets” have “serious concerns” with ZoneCasting technology. Among the large and small radio broadcasters the NAB speaks of is Urban One.

Now, one of the company’s board members has written to the FCC in support of ZoneCasting. Naturally, the company seeking to get the Commission to OK a rulemaking allowing ZoneCasting to happen says it is a sign the Urban One board doesn’t wholly agree on the matter — even if the statement didn’t come from Urban One itself.
