Wall Street goes wild for Pandora Media IPO
A scathing last-minute "Heard on the Street" column in the Wall Street Journal didn't scare speculators away from the initial public offering of Pandora Media. Shares of the Internet streaming "radio" company priced at $16 – well above the projected range of $10-12, which had already been increased a few days ago.

RBR-TVBR observation: We were predicting a strong pricing, but this is just mind-blowing. There are no metrics to support the price – just hype. But the hype has been effective. We still look for the price to shoot up from the $16 IPO price when trading begins. More...

McGraw-Hill hangs for sale sign on TV group

Latest snapshot of TV viewing
Over three-quarters of Americans (77%) have watched a TV show on the Internet rather than on a traditional television. 30% of US adults say, however, they're not interested in giving up their cable TV in favor of watching TV shows on the net. However, over half of those with cable would stop paying for cable, if certain stipulations were met (56%).

RBR-TVBR observation: It all eventually will boil down to what the cord is bringing into the monitor-as simple as that. If an online broadcaster could deliver the same content as a cable MSO for less of a fee, there would be plenty that would make the switch. With iPTV sets abundant now, the consumer is ready, but will the cable and broadcast networks let go and let all of their programming simulcast on the net? Right now many people are just preferring cable TV because the screen is bigger and they'd have to watch internet TV on their laptop or PC-uncomfortable. More...

Bible gets the chair at Fisher Communications
The new board of directors at Fisher Communications has elected Paul A. Bible as the non-executive Chairman of the Board. Former Chairman Michael Wortsman was not re-elected to a seat in the contentious May shareholders meeting which saw dissidents gain two seats for a total of three on the nine-member board.

RBR-TVBR observation: That Vietnam War experience may help the new chairman keep some perspective as the fighting rages in the Fisher boardroom over whether to put some or all of the company up for sale. At least there won't be any bullets flying. More...

Cable may score 10%-12% more upfront
After wrapping up their upfront last week, broadcast networks look like they will score $8.7 billion to $9.5 billion for primetime commercials for next season, an 8.1% increase. Now its cable's turn and they're on track to close out the upfront with about $1 billion more than last year.

RBR-TVBR observation: The evidence is certainly out there that Pay TV households are on the rise. While the numbers are contested, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) found the number of homes that rely on over-the-air signals for TV programming plummeted last year to 8% of all U.S. households with TVs. Another recent report says Pay TV penetration at the end of 2010 reached 90% in North America. So for the most part, more homes are hooked into cable than ever before and the rates are simply increasing because of it. More...

Charlie Sheen being shopped for new comedy
Not long after CBS announced Ashton Kutcher is his replacement on Two and a Half Men, Charlie Sheen is looking to get back into TV with a new comedy series. According to TMZ, Fox may be the network. Sheen has been pitched to some networks and studios for a new comedy series - but no clarity on if it is specific theme or just that Sheen is offering to work in a comedic role again.

RBR-TVBR observation: as Deadline Hollywood's Nikki Finke noted, "Sheen's Corner," a proposed comedy series he was going to do on HBO never materialized; nor did his proposed show on Mark Cuban's HDNet. Because Sheen is pretty much uninsurable, networks or studios would be more likely to sign him as a regular guest star than for a full-blown star on a new comedy series. He has to prove himself in the ring again, so to speak. More...

Retail sales up, but spending slows
Though retail sales rose for the 11th straight month in May, rising gas prices and a weak labor market took the steam out of consumer spending. According to the National Retail Federation, retail industry sales (which exclude automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants) for May increased 0.1% seasonally adjusted from April and 5.0% unadjusted YOY. Only a few retail sectors reported growth. More...

US ad spend up 4.4% in Q1
Total advertising expenditures finished the quarter at $32.5 billion. Although Q1 performance fell below 2010 levels, the ad market has now achieved five consecutive quarters of YOY growth. Television: sports programming cable TV spend up nearly 32%. Network TV ad spend down 10%. Local Radio up 3.4% and National Spot Radio down 3.3% for the quarter.

Wall Street likely to ignore Pandora naysayers
RBR-TVBR observation: Our prediction is that the offering will price at the top of the projected $10-12 per share range (and maybe go over) and that the full greenshoe will be picked up. That doesn't mean we've change our mind about Pandora's business model. Nor would we want to own any of the shares. But the hype is going to drown out those who are shouting "Internet bubble" and the stock will jump on the NYSE from whatever the IPO price turns out to be. Problem: making this business turn a profit.

Santorum first GOP presidential hopeful to buy radio ads
RBR-TVBR observation: Not surprising that Santorum would turn to radio to try to break out of the GOP pack. He's certainly comfortable behind the mic, having just recently ended a regular fill-in host job with Salem Radio Networks as he declared himself an official candidate for the Oval Office.

Block Communications will not be picking up The CW for KTRV-TV Boise after losing Fox to former CW affiliate KNIN-TV, owned by Journal Communications. Instead, the new CW affiliate is Fisher Communications' KBOI-TV (CBS), which will put The CW on a digital multicast channel. Effective no later than September 12.

Walkers gather some Moss with hybrid Texas deal
Here's something you don't see every day - a married couple in an unrated portion of Texas is buying one station and striking a time brokerage agreement for another, and the seller/landlord in both cases will be the same person. The result will be a de facto old-fashioned AM-FM combo.
