WASHINGTON, D.C. — What do the father of a former FCC Commissioner and interim Chairman, a current FCC Commissioner, and a now-retired highly esteemed communications law of counsel for Foster Garvey have in common?
All are “champions of digital equality,” and were honored Wednesday for their efforts by the Multicultural Media, Telecom and Internet Council.
The MMTC from 10am-11:15am held its inaugural Champions of Digital Equality and 35th Anniversary Kickoff event, held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The event began with the honoring of Erwin Krasnow, a MMTC co-founder, longtime Vice Chair and Chair of MMTC’s Mentoring Committee.
Krasnow, a prolific RBR+TVBR columnist, recently retired. And, congratulatory notes were received by RBR+TVBR on his behalf across Wednesday morning (12/9).
The MMTC event also featured a fireside chat with House Majority Whip Hon. James Clyburn, whose daughter, Mignon Clyburn, is a member of the Biden FCC transition team and was the first African-American woman to serve as Chair of the agency.
This was followed by a keynote address by FCC Commissioner Geoffrey Starks.
The event concluded with a roundtable discussion of leading experts on MMTC’s “AI and Civil Rights” White Paper Series, commenting on civil rights and artificial intelligence in the age of big data with a focus on the way that big data and algorithms can either marginalize, or benefit, communities of color.
